I have the privilege of, practically on any free afternoon, taking my old bicycle or even walking (because, as you know, I love to walk) and getting away from the town streets for about four or five kilometers and immersing myself in that space which I like to call "Rural Montalbán" or sometimes "The Other Montalbán," and that's what I did today, and these photos correspond to my afternoon visiting the farm where a former high school classmate named Juan Carlos works, whom I found there along with his son and grandson doing some farm work...

Tengo el privilegio de, prácticamente en cualquier tarde libre, tomar mi vieja bicicleta o incluso caminando (porque, como ustedes saben, amo caminar) y alejarme de las calles del pueblo unos cuatro o cinco kilómetros y así sumergirme en ese espacio el cual me gusta llamar "Montalbán rural" u otras veces "El otro Montalbán", y eso fue lo que hice hoy, y estas fotos corresponde a mi tarde visitando la granja en donde labora un antiguo compañero de secundaria llamado Juan Carlos, a quien encontré allí junto con su hijo y su nieto haciendo algunas labores de campo...

When I say that taking these kinds of trips is a privilege for me, I mean it. Truly incredible things happen to me in these places, like finding that old farm tractor on the farm where Juan Carlos works. It's the same one that was used on these and other properties almost forty years ago, back when my friend and I were teenagers and spent time fishing or picking mangoes to eat on these lands... Little did my friend know he'd end up using that old tractor for work! The land has changed hands, but some things, like that tractor, remain...

Cuando digo que, para mi, hacer este tipo de paseos es un privilegio, lo digo muy en serio. Pues en estos lugares me suceden cosas realmente increíbles, como el hecho de encontrar allí, en la granja en donde trabaja Juan Carlos, ese viejo tractor agrícola, el cual es el mismo que se usaba en estos y otros terrenos casi cuarenta años atrás, cuando precisamente tanto mi amigo como yo, éramos adolescentes y pasábamos algún tiempo pescando o buscando mangos para comer en estas propiedades... ¡Que se iba a Imaginar mi amigo que él terminaría usando ese viejo tractor para trabajar!... Las tierras han cambiado de dueños, pero algunas cosas como ese tractor siguen allí...

And in fact, making these occasional forays into rural areas is, for me, like a kind of journey back to a time that never was. Many things, besides that lovely old tractor, of course, remain the same... The old stoves in the kitchens of the little houses, the landscape with its pastures, the way of cultivating and harvesting, even the old dirt roads look just as they did when I was a boy, and appreciating all of this in this way is, for me, "a privilege"...

Y de hecho, hacer estas incursiones ocasionales en los espacios rurales, es para mi como una especie de viaje a tiempos que no pasaron. Muchas cosas, además de ese lindo tractor antiguo por supuesto, siguen iguales... Las viejas estufas de las cocinas en las casitas, el paisaje con pastizales, la manera de cultivar y cosechar, hasta las viejos caminos de tierra lucen como cuando yo era un muchacho, y apreciar todo esto así, es eso para mi: "un privilegio"...
