For years, I’ve been setting up the space to make it as welcoming as possible for the birds that visit, especially by planting flowers that really attract them. |
Desde hace años he ido acondicionando el lugar para que resulte lo más agradable posible para las aves que lo visitan, sobre todo sembrando flores que les atraen mucho. |
Many species pass through here, but this hummingbird has taken control and rules with an iron beak. He’s extremely territorial and maintains an iron grip on every flower that blooms. |
Muchas especies pasan por aquí, pero este zunzún tomó el control y gobierna con pluma de hierro. Es extremadamente territorial y mantiene un dominio férreo sobre cada flor que nace. |
It cracks me up because he doesn’t care about size: he’ll take on a bee just as easily as a pigeon. The flowers are his… period. |
Me da mucha gracia porque no entiende de tamaños: lo mismo se enfrenta a una abeja que a una paloma. Las flores son suyas… y punto. |
Of course, the photographer enjoys every detail. Since he’s so focused on feeding, I can get pretty close and snap “the perfect shot.” |
Claro, el fotógrafo disfruta de cada detalle. Como se concentra tanto en alimentarse, puedo acercarme bastante y hacerle “la foto de los 15”. |
It’s also a challenge, because he never stops moving. And my camera, which is getting on in years, sometimes struggles to focus on these little ones in mid-flight. Even so, it ends up being excellent field practice. |
También es un reto, porque no deja de moverse. Y mi cámara, ya entradita en años, a veces sufre para enfocar a estos pequeños en pleno vuelo. Aun así, termina siendo una excelente práctica de campo. |
I’m not always right on top of him with the camera. Most of the time I don’t even go near him, so he can stay calm, though I’d dare say he’s already gotten used to my presence. |
No siempre estoy encima de él con la cámara. La mayoría de las veces ni me acerco, para que esté tranquilo, aunque me atrevería a decir que ya se ha acostumbrado a mi presencia. |
And that’s how I spend my time when I can’t go out to Havana: with my friend the zunzún, enjoying the patio, the flowers, and practicing photography. |
Y así paso el tiempo cuando no puedo salir a La Habana: con mi amigo el zunzún, disfrutando del patio, las flores y practicando fotografía. |
