Emigrating, for whatever reason, exposes the migrant to countless situations that completely transform the dynamics of their life. It's not just about changing scenery or language, but about reconfiguring, from within, that intimate and fragile institution we know as family.

Emigrar, por las razones que sean, expone al peregrino a un sinfín de situaciones que transforman por completo la dinámica de su vida. No se trata solo de cambiar de paisaje o de idioma, sino de reconfigurar, desde dentro, esa institución íntima y frágil que conocemos como familia.

Sometimes, that process doesn't end with the journey. On the contrary, it continues over time. Those who once walked with you begin to chart their own course, to embark on their own small crusades within those human currents that, silently, redraw the map of the world.

A veces, ese proceso no termina con el viaje. Al contrario, se prolonga en el tiempo. Quienes un día caminaron contigo comienzan a trazar sus propios rumbos, a emprender sus pequeñas cruzadas dentro de esas corrientes humanas que, silenciosamente, redibujan el mapa del mundo.

And then comes the moment when you discover yourself alone. Not all at once, but little by little. You settle in as best you can, looking for footholds, inventing balances to sustain yourself amidst the constant demands of a new scenario.

Y entonces llega el momento en que te descubres solo. No de golpe, sino poco a poco. Te vas acomodando como puedes, buscando asideros, inventando equilibrios para sostenerte en medio de la exigencia constante de un nuevo escenario.

The city, with its frenetic pace, offers no respite. Everything happens too fast, leaving little room for a pause, a breath of calm, that necessary moment when one can simply be at peace with oneself.

La ciudad, con su ritmo trepidante, no concede treguas. Todo ocurre demasiado rápido, y apenas queda espacio para una pausa, para una bocanada de calma, para ese instante necesario en el que uno puede simplemente estar en paz consigo mismo.

However, even amidst this vertigo, unexpected refuges exist. Places that aren't always physical, but that manage to sustain you. For me, the Cuban Birdwatching Community has been precisely that: a space to reconnect, to experience catharsis, and to rediscover harmony with what is essential.

Sin embargo, incluso en medio de ese vértigo, existen refugios inesperados. Lugares que no siempre son físicos, pero que logran sostenerte. Para mí, la Comunidad Cubana de Observadores de Aves ha sido precisamente eso: un espacio donde reconectar, donde hacer catarsis y volver a encontrar armonía con lo esencial.

There, amidst walks, laughter, and shared silences, the burden becomes lighter. Each outing to the field, each species discovered, each "lifer," each record—perfect or imperfect—becomes a small victory worth celebrating.

Allí, entre recorridos, risas y silencios compartidos, la carga se vuelve más ligera. Cada salida al campo, cada especie descubierta, cada “lifer”, cada registro —perfecto o imperfecto— se convierte en una pequeña victoria que vale la pena celebrar.

Today I can say, without reservation, that I found more than just fellow enthusiasts among you. I found camaraderie, support, and above all, a sense of belonging at a time when I needed it most.
