Greetings, Hivers.
Today I want to share a few photos I took of two people during the procession of La Merced in Old Havana. An elderly man who was asking for a bit of monetary help, and a young guy selling religious items and magazines to get by. At first glance they seemed very different, but in the end they had something in common: both are trying to move forward however they can.
I’ve always believed that when you photograph someone in these situations, there’s also a human responsibility behind it. That’s why before taking the camera out, I stopped to talk with them, listen to their stories, and give them some help. Sometimes a few minutes of attention mean more than the photo itself. In the case of the old man, the need was obvious; and with the young man, you could also feel his struggles, even if he tried to hide them behind a shy smile.
These photos are not just images. They’re a way to give them visibility, to remind others that there are people who need real and constant support. I hope that anyone who passes by where they are can offer them a hand as well. It costs nothing to be a little more human, and for many of them, that small gesture means everything.

Hoy les voy a compartir unas pocas fotos que les hice a dos personas el dÃa de la procesión de la Merced en La Habana Vieja. Un señor mayor que estaba pidiendo una ayuda monetaria y un muchacho joven que vende artÃculos y revistas religiosas para poder sobrevivir. A simple vista parecÃan muy diferentes, pero al final los dos tenÃan algo en común: ambos están intentando salir adelante como pueden.
Siempre he pensado que cuando uno fotografÃa a alguien en estas situaciones, también hay una responsabilidad humana detrás. Por eso, antes de sacar la cámara, me detuve a hablar con ellos, escuchar un poco sus historias y darles una ayuda. A veces unos minutos de atención valen más que la propia foto. En el caso del señor, la necesidad era evidente; en el del muchacho, sus dificultades también, aunque tratara de esconderlas detrás de su sonrisa tÃmida.
Estas fotos no son solo imágenes. Son una forma de darles visibilidad, de recordar que existen personas que necesitan apoyo real y constante. Ojalá que quienes pasen por donde ellos están puedan brindarles una mano también. No cuesta nada ser un poco más humanos, y para muchos de ellos ese pequeño gesto significa muchÃsimo.
