Hail to the Hive!
Yesterday I encountered another lovely old building, a Pub no less, that is being left to slowly decay. It both saddens and angers me as I know that the reason it is being left to slowly rot is because property developer’s cannot tear it down as it a Listed Historical building. So they wait until it falls apart and then move in to build some sterile monstrosity.
It made me sad for several reasons. Firstly it’s just wrong as if you are going to grade a building and list it for protection due to its historical significance in the area then there should be a requirement to maintain or sell.
Secondly, I’ve personally had many a pint in this Pub in years gone by and it was a lovely place. Even the artwork on the ceiling was listed but a carefully placed hole in the roof and English weather has apparently put paid to that. Deliberate put hard to prove. Standard practice though.
We travel to towns and cities and talk endlessly about the lovely architecture and how lovely they are and yet allow this type of thing to happen in other, shall we say, less fashionable towns and cities.
I’ve done several posts where old buildings have been repurposed and they generate a lot of positive feedback and I just wish towns and cities would pay closer attention to the historical destruction that quietly takes place.
