Hail to the Hive!
After a lot of cruising in bad weather to beat a scheduled lock closure we made it to Chirk. Chirk marks the border between England and Wales and once we’ve crossed this we will be on our way to an even bigger, longer canal aqueduct which is hard to imagine as this one is quite impressive.
We decided to take a walk down the road to have a look at both the canal aqueduct and railway viaduct ( that runs along side it ) from below, to get some perspective.
From below the sheer size of the arches is mind boggling. It looks strong despite it being over two hundred years old. Hope it is we will be cruising over it later.
Interestingly the stone bricks/ blocks used in its construction are not uniform in size which I found intriguing. It must have taken ages to sort out that puzzle.
Stood below looking up at the arches of both the viaduct and the aqueduct I feel like I am stood below some ancient monument rather than a functional structure that is still in operation today.
Time to test it out and cruise across from England to Wales secure in the knowledge that it is one solidly built piece of engineering!
