Hail to the Hive!
When we return to my hometown of Leicester on our little floating home,Badger the Narrowboat, we have two preferred city centre mooring spots. I have previously posted some photos from both of them, Friars Mill and Castle Gardens. Today I took a long walk north along the canal with the intention of taking a variety of photographs from a different vantage point. The canals, both in the city centres and in the countryside, are a rich source of creative content and I needed to get my juices flowing.
Friars Mill Wharf
The moorings at Friars mill have quite a rich history with the site itself being named because from the 13th to the 16th Centuries there had been a Dominican Priory (also known as the Black Friars) located on the site.
The main survining building known as Friars Mill was one of the very earliest textile factories in Leicester . I love that the site has been repurposed and a floating pontoon attached for us to tie up our Narrowboats.
A great place to be located as it is right in the city centre only a few minutes walk from a plethora of pubs, shops and restaurants.
I think it also casts a pretty striking image in between the modern buildings either side and stands proudly on the waterfront almost challenging its new upstart neighbours to stand for as many years as it has
I somehow doubt that they will.
