Sleeping in is not my thing, especially when there are prints to be made. So at 530 this morning I was setting up my enlarger, ready to use the new kitchen timer to ensure proper development.
Last time I kept getting foggy images that were too light. From what I read that usually occurs when the development time is too short, or the exposure is too short. Since the enlarger is on a timer I figured I was probably getting the exposure right, so I got a timer for the developer.
I started with medium format since that's what I used before. Exposure times seemed right, and I made sure to develop for exactly one minute. Everything seemed decent, still not perfect, but less foggy.
Then I tried 35 mm since I didn't do it before. Annnd it came out like this: Actually it came out as nothing. So I mixed up new developer and tried again. Nothing. I thought maybe my paper was spoiled so I turned the lights on a few times and developed it. Black. So it wasn't the papers, and it wasn't the developer. Had to be the time.
So I went with 30 seconds.
Back to being too light. So 45 seconds. That was better but then I ended up with white splotches. Back to my little cheatsheet I found online. Too little developer.
So more developer and 45 seconds. Almost perfect, though I should use a different filter for a bit more contrast.
Having figured out that 35 mm takes a bit longer to get right I decided to try a color negative just for the heck of it. I have found a few sources that said it should work, so why not?
A little less definition but I like it :)
Hopefully my free days will soon be filled with more experiments and better success!
