Hey All,
I keep seeing the above image in my X feed in different forms. And this is the best version of it that clearly indicates that 2026 marks the peak of the current economic cycle. The chart is based on the idea of long, repeating boom-and-bust patterns particularly the so called 18-year cycle implying that periods of expansion inevitably lead to peaks followed by recessions. Is all of this really true? I’m not entirely sure. Whether 2026 actually proves to be a peak is something only time will confirm. I really like how the years has been presented in different category set as:: Panic, Good & Hard Times
- A — Panic Years - Years of panic, crisis, and great depression. Panic Selling
- B — Good Times - Years of prosperity aka Boom phase and high prices. Profit booking opportunities
- C — Hard Times - Years of hardship and low prices. Buying opportunities
Does 2026 Mark the Next Peak? Is this Good or BAD?
I’m putting this image here on the HIVE blockchain so it remains with us. At a later point in time, we can look back and see whether all of this truly made sense OR whether it was just another random story that didn’t turn out to be true. According to National Bureau of Economic Research here is the data on the ression periods and so we can compare it with the above chart.
| Recession Period | Duration | Cause (simplified) |
|---|---|---|
| 1948–1949 | 11 months | Post-war slowdown |
| 1953–1954 | 10 months | Defense spending cuts |
| 1957–1958 | 8 months | Inflation + tightening |
| 1960–1961 | 10 months | Monetary tightening |
| 1969–1970 | 11 months | Vietnam + inflation |
| 1973–1975 | 16 months | Oil shock |
| 1980 | 6 months | Inflation fight |
| 1981–1982 | 16 months | High interest rates |
| 1990–1991 | 8 months | Credit crunch |
| 2001 | 8 months | Dot-com bust |
| 2007–2009 | 18 months | Global Financial Crisis |
| 2020 - 2023 | 36 months | COVID shock |
What I could infer is that the concept of boom and bust may be real but what is not certain is the exact timing. I would further add that charts like these are useful for thinking but not for predicting. And what matters more than dates is being prepared for uncertainty. The better prepared we are, the better we position ourselves during both hard and good times. Well this should be it for todays post on - "Does 2026 Mark the Next Peak? Is this Good or BAD?" Embrace the change and stay prepared for both good and hard times.... cheers
