Any lichen expert here? I beleive this is ramalina fastigiata.
Those little bell shaped ends remind me of shrek's ears π€£ Do you agree? (if you look closer, I know I am mad).π€
Lichens are a unique symbiotic association between an alga/cyanobacterium and a fungus. This type is the most common throughout UK and widespread on well-lit, nutrient-rich bark.
Lichens have lots of amazing properties that could benefit health and have been used for a long history in food and medicinal fields. But due to its secondary matabolites that are possibly toxic - it is not advisable to take them internally. Further research would be ideal so we can avail its amazing health benefits.
Sooo
I am collecting few not for culinary or medicinal purposes but to extract its beautiful scent that is very peculiar, mild woody and pleasant aroma that linger for a while, great as spray on linens. or use it as ironing water, apart from smelling gorgeous, it will kill some germs as well.
Others use them to make beautiful dyes which i am interested to try in the future.
I find it easier to collect them on a windy day as you'll find them on the ground.
