Cari amici, anche se manca un pezzo a Natale, già mi sto cimentando con la musica natalizia (che per la cronaca, dovete sapere che mi fa piacere ascoltarla pure a luglio). Ma dopotutto, per chi è cristiano il Natale è tutto l'anno e non soltanto nella convenzionale data del 25 dicembre. Mi scuso comunque sempre per l'archetto che non posso minimamente pensare di cambiare adesso. Per come è conciato, ha il brutto vizio di tendere a saltellare sulle corde. Credetemi che faccio i salti mortali per cercare di impedirglielo, ma spesso non sortiscono effetto. Mi conforta però l'aver saputo, leggendo in forum dedicato al violino, che se l'archetto ha certi difettucci nemmeno il maestro di turno riesce a fermare il dispettosello saltellante😂. Ma bando alle ciance e andiamo alla musica. In un certo qual senso, gli autori di questa musica natalizia sarebbero Davies Gilbert (1767-1839), che scrisse strofe aggiuntive del testo, e William Sandys (1792-1874), che si occupó di edizione e arrangiamenti. Per meglio specificare, in un certo qual senso significa che l'autore originario (che risale senz'altro a tempi ancora più antichi del settecento), è sconosciuto, ma Gilbert e Sandys si possono considerare coautori per il lavoro svolto che non fu di poco conto.
Come al solito, mi sento più sicura registrando una strofa sola. D'altra parte, sarebbe più consono reistrarle tutte se vi fosse chi canta mentre suono, ma questa è un'altra storia. Ecco la prima strofa:

1 The first Noel the angel did say
was to certain poor shepherds in fields as they lay,
in fields where they lay keeping their sheep,
on a cold winter’s night that was so deep.
Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel,
born is the King of Israel.

Dear friends, even though Christmas is not so near, I'm already trying my hand at Christmas music (I assure you I enjoy listening Christmas music in July too). But after all, for those who are Christians, Christmas is all year round and not just on the conventional date of 25 December. However, I always apologise for the bow, which I cannot think of changing now. As it is, it has the nasty habit of tending to jump on the strings. Believe me, I jump through hoops to try to stop it from doing that, but it often has no effect. What comforts me, however, is having learnt from reading in a forum dedicated to the violin that if the bow has certain flaws, not even a teacher can stop the jumping mischief😂. But let's cut to the chase and get to the music. To a certain extent, the authors of this Christmas music would be Davies Gilbert (1767-1839), who wrote additional stanzas of the text, and William Sandys (1792-1874), who took care of the edition and arrangements. To be more specific, in a way it means that the original author (who undoubtedly dates back to even earlier than the 18th century), is unknown, but Gilbert and Sandys can be considered co-authors for the work they did, which was no small feat.
As usual, I feel safer recording a single stanza. On the other hand, it would be more appropriate to re-record them all if there were someone singing while I play, but that is another story. Here is the first stanza:
