Come di consueto oggi vi porto dentro una nuova Anteprima di un articolo che fra qualche giorno o settimana vedrete Nella Mente di un SerialFiller, il mio blog interamente incentrato sul mondo delle serie tv e di cui, da qualche mese, ho deciso di regalarvi costantemente, in anticipo su quello che pubblicherò, gran parte dei post che vedrete su www.serialfiller.org.

Nelle first impression sulla quarta stagione vi avevo già accennato qualcosa. Le trovate qui in caso vogliate correre a recuperarle.
La gioia con la quale avevamo accolto il ritorno di Midge e gli altri personaggi, era una gioia genuina e palpabile, come quelle che si provano nel ritrovare un amico lontano e che da tempo non si riusciva ad incontrare di persona. Può capitare, però, che quel nuovo incontro serbi anche qualche nota di delusione, qualche sbadiglio, qualche difficoltà ad "acchiapparsi" dopo tanta lontananza e a distanza di anni dai momenti migliori.
E' quello che mi è sembrato accadere con The Marvelous Mrs Maisel 4.

Non allo stesso modo con cui seguivo, apprezzavo e tifavo nelle stagioni precedenti.
Qualcosa si è incrinato nel nostro rapporto personaggio-spettatore.
Cosa esattamente non so ma nulla è stato neppure lontanamente paragonabile al vecchio rapporto che ci legava.
Midge ha gettato alle ortiche una grande occasione quando si è allontanata dal mondo patinato e di successo di Baldwin. Da li una discesa che potrebbe eludere e preparare una forte ascesa possibile nella stagione 5 (o almeno cosi ci suggerisce l'ottimo finale).
Da lì in poi la protagonista è entrata in un vortice, poco convinto, di fallimenti e autopunizioni, anche queste poco convinte.
Il mondo di Midge, in qualche modo si è sgretolato senza che ce ne fosse davvero bisogno e forse questa è stata la chiave del gradimento minore verso questa stagione.
L'evoluzione (o meglio l'involuzione) è sembrata un pochettino sciatta e superficiale. Midge era davvero pentita? Era delusa da se stessa? Era delusa dagli uomini della propria vita? Ha smesso di credere in se stessa?
Non lo abbiamo mai veramente capito. E' solo sembrato di assistere ad un velleitario purgatorio dal quale si procederà, presumibilmente, verso il paradiso.
Ma se l'evoluzione di Midge ha preoccupato, senza tuttavia manifestarsi in un disastro, non si può dire lo stesso per gli altri personaggi, tutti quanti apparsi spaesati profondamente.
Da Abe fino a sua moglie, da Susie al Mr. Maisel, fino ad arrivare a tutti gli altri personaggi secondari della serie, nessuno può dirsi "migliorato" in termini narrativi rispetto alle stagioni precedenti.
Forse qualcosa si è rotto o forse questa amorfità è stata voluta per preludere a qualcosa di stupefacente nella quinta stagione.
Del resto, volere male alla Signora Maisel è letteralmente impossibile.

The fourth season of The Marvelous Mrs Maisel aired in the early part of 2022 and released, as always, by Amazon Prime Video.
For the first time we denoted some creaking in the scaffolding crafted by the always witty Amy Sherman Paladino.
The fantastic Mrs. Maisel seemed less bright and titillating than usual, also accomplice to a particularly "no" phase that her character has experienced this season.
Even the dialogues, to tell the truth, which have always been a real strength of the show, suffered from a bit of fatigue.
Nothing of concern but it is fair to point out that, this now long-running series, there was a slight fatigue to accompany the 8 episodes of the last season.

In the first impressions on season 4 I had already mentioned something to you. You can find them here in case you want to rush to catch up.
The joy with which we had greeted the return of Midge and the other characters was a genuine and palpable joy, like the kind you feel when you find a distant friend whom you haven't been able to meet in person for a long time. It may happen, however, that that new meeting also holds some notes of disappointment, some yawning, some difficulty in "catching up" after so much distance and years after the best of times.
That is what seemed to happen to me with The Marvelous Mrs Maisel 4.
Did I enjoy most of the dialogue?
Yes.
Did I follow the various storylines with interest?
Yes.
Did I root for Midge and Susie?
Yes.
Not in the same way I followed, appreciated and cheered in previous seasons.
Something cracked in our character-viewer relationship.
What exactly I don't know but nothing has been even close to the old relationship between us.
Midge threw a great opportunity out the window when she walked away from Baldwin's glossy, successful world. From there a descent that could elude and prepare for a strong possible rise in season 5 (or so the excellent finale suggests).
From there on, the protagonist entered a whirlpool of failures and self-punishment, also unconvincing.
Midge's world somehow crumbled without really needing to, and perhaps this was the key to the minor liking towards this season.
The evolution (or rather the involution) seemed a tad sloppy and superficial. Was Midge really repentant? Was she disappointed in herself? Was she disappointed in the men in her own life? Did she stop believing in herself?
We never really understood that. It just seemed like we were witnessing a vague purgatory from which we would proceed, presumably, to heaven.
But if Midge's evolution worried, yet without manifesting itself in disaster, the same cannot be said for the other characters, all of whom appeared deeply bewildered.
From Abe to his wife, from Susie to Mr. Maisel to all the other secondary characters in the series, no one can be said to have "improved" in narrative terms from previous seasons.
Perhaps something is broken, or perhaps this amorphity was intended as a prelude to something amazing in season five.
After all, to want to hurt Mrs. Maisel is literally impossible.
