Come di consueto oggi vi porto dentro una nuova Anteprima di un articolo che fra qualche giorno o settimana vedrete Nella Mente di un SerialFiller, il mio blog interamente incentrato sul mondo delle serie tv e di cui, da qualche mese, ho deciso di regalarvi costantemente, in anticipo su quello che pubblicherò, gran parte dei post che vedrete su www.serialfiller.org.

Si va ad alcatraz, su fox, 10 anni fa

Nel 2012, esattamente il 16 Gennaio, usciva Alcatraz. Usciva su Fox. Usciva con un hype che oggi non immaginereste.
Erano gli anni del post lost e tutti eravamo in cerca disperata della nuova Lost.
L'avevamo cercata ovunque e senza successo.
Come tutti gli innamorati dal cuore spezzato, dopo averla cercata altrove quella stessa felicità, constatato l'insuccesso di quella affannosa ricerca, siamo tornati all'ovile.
E per noi, orfani di Jack, John, Sawyer, Hugo, Kate e tutti gli altri, l'ovile aveva un volto ed un nome, quello di JJ Abrams.
L'autore, regista, produttore, aveva fatto parlare di se, e tanto, grazie all'isola e ai sopravvissuti del volo Oceanic 815.
Il suo nome riecheggiava ovunque e lo aveva portato ad ottenere uno status invidiabile, che gli aveva aperto porte e portoni non solo in tv, conducendolo a dirigere 3 Star Trek, il nostalgico Super 8 e diventare, con la sua Bad Robot, uno dei produttori più prolifici del panorama seriale e cinematografico.
Alcatraz fu uno dei suoi primi progetti seriali post Lost.
L'attesa nasceva da qui e si alimentava dal fatto che Alcatraz fosse una serie su cui si celava il massimo riserbo.

Non che mi interessi della trama ma ve la racconto in poche parole per farvi capire la semplice idea sulla quale si fondava l'intero show.
All'interno della prigione più famosa al mondo avveniva qualcosa di incredibile. I detenuti non appartenevano all'epoca contemporanea. I prigionieri, infatti, sono "vecchi" prigionieri, misteriosamente tenuti in vita e giovani all'interno della prigione.
Una prigione temporale potremmo definirla, o almeno potremmo ipotizzare cosi.
Eh si, perchè nonostante la spinta Abrams, nonostante un discreto cast, nonostante una storia intrigante, nonostante una location importante, nonostante un titolo che evocava cose di un certo tipo, Alcatraz si sciolse come neve al sole.
La FOX non decise di rinnovarla.
Gli ascolti non erano dei migliori (Eh si, era ancora l'epoca pre-Netflix in cui si guardavano gli ascolti e in base a quelli si decideva chi dovesse vivere e chi dovesse morire) e la Fox salutò la serie dopo una sola stagione.

Era cosi brutto? Perchè la il pubblico non la accettò come atteso?
L'idea che mi feci all'epoca fu quella di una serie con un enorme potenziale ma che aveva compiuto un errore tipico della tv generalista: la verticalità.
Un po come avvenne per la prima stagione di Fringe, JJ puntò molto sul "caso di giornata", dimenticando di allacciare i nodi intorno ad una trama orizzontale più robusta.
La trama orizzontale, infatti, era stata molto marginale, solo accennata. Ogni puntata celava un easter egg, qualche indizio, qualche piccola menzione al grande quadro.
Questo fece perdere immediatamente l'interesse a chi cercava una serie che fosse ampia e di orizzonti molto aperti.
La scarsa orizzontalità, a mio avviso, allontanò coloro i quali in quello show speravano di trovarne tanta.

Qualche plot twist di troppo, alcune scelte narrative difficili da capire all'istante, una serie tutt'altro che didascalica, rendeva questo prodotto non l'ideale per un pubblico che voleva solo staccare la spina di fronte alla tv.
E cosi, anche la fetta di pubblico generalista si è ridotta drasticamente.

La verità è che quello show meritava un'altra chance.
E' stato un flop innegabile. La cancellazione, lo scarso successo, la delusione, l'hanno resa un flop indiscusso ma questo, almeno in quel caso, non equivaleva ad una bocciatura totale di una serie che poteva andare lontano.
Non lo ha fatto.
Fermandosi ad Alcatraz, imprigionata da se stessa.

We go to alcatraz, on fox, 10 years ago

In 2012, exactly on January 16, Alcatraz came out. It came out on Fox. It came out with a hype that you wouldn't imagine today.
It was the post-Lost years and we were all desperately looking for the new Lost.
We looked for it everywhere and to no avail.
Like all broken-hearted lovers, after looking elsewhere for that same happiness, and noting the failure of that frantic search, we returned to the fold.
And for us, orphans of Jack, John, Sawyer, Hugo, Kate and all the others, the fold had a face and a name, that of JJ Abrams.
The author, director, producer, had made people talk about him, and a lot, thanks to the island and the survivors of Oceanic flight 815.
His name echoed everywhere and led him to obtain an enviable status, which opened doors and gates not only in TV, leading him to direct 3 Star Treks, the nostalgic Super 8 and become, with his Bad Robot, one of the most prolific producers of the serial and film scene.
Alcatraz was one of his first serial projects post-Lost.
The anticipation came from here and was fueled by the fact that Alcatraz was a series about which the utmost secrecy was hidden.

Not that I care about the plot but I'll tell you about it in a few words so you can understand the simple idea on which the whole show was based.
Inside the most famous prison in the world something incredible was happening. The prisoners did not belong to the contemporary era. The prisoners, in fact, are "old" prisoners, mysteriously kept alive and young inside the prison.
A temporal prison we could call it, or at least we could assume so.
Yes, because despite the push Abrams, despite a decent cast, despite an intriguing story, despite an important location, despite a title that evoked things of a certain type, Alcatraz melted like snow in the sun.
FOX didn't decide to renew it.
The ratings were not the best (yes, it was still the pre-Netflix era where you looked at the ratings and based on those you decided who should live and who should die) and Fox said goodbye to the series after only one season.

Was it that bad? Why didn't the audience accept it as expected?
The idea I had at the time was that of a series with enormous potential but that had made a typical mistake of generalist TV: the verticality.
A bit like the first season of Fringe, JJ focused a lot on the "case of the day", forgetting to tie the knots around a more robust horizontal plot.
The horizontal plot, in fact, had been very marginal, only hinted at. Each episode hid an easter egg, some clue, some small mention of the big picture.
This made immediately lose interest to those looking for a series that was wide and very open horizons.
The lack of horizontality, in my opinion, drove away those who hoped to find a lot in that show.

A few plot twists too many, some narrative choices difficult to understand instantly, a series far from didactic, made this product not ideal for an audience that just wanted to unplug in front of the TV.
And so, the slice of the generalist audience was drastically reduced as well.

The truth is, that show deserved another chance.
It was an undeniable flop. The cancellation, the lack of success, the disappointment, made it an unquestionable flop but this, at least in that case, did not amount to a total rejection of a series that could have gone far.
It didn't.
Stopping at Alcatraz, imprisoned by itself.
