Come di consueto oggi vi porto dentro una nuova Anteprima di un articolo che fra qualche giorno o settimana vedrete Nella Mente di un SerialFiller, il mio blog interamente incentrato sul mondo delle serie tv e di cui, da qualche mese, ho deciso di regalarvi costantemente, in anticipo su quello che pubblicherò, gran parte dei post che vedrete su www.serialfiller.org.

Oggi sono qui a legittimare (o delegittimare) una delle serie tv più viste, amate, discusse della storia della tv.
Era il 27 Marzo del 2005 quando la ABC (emittente ancora dominante in quei tempi pre-netflix) mandò in onda il pilot di Grey's Anatomy.
La allora semi sconosciuta Shonda Rhymes era al timone di quella che sarebbe diventata una delle serie più riconoscibili dell'intera storia della televisione mondiale.
Una prima stagione di soli 9 episodi bastò a rendere Grey's Anatomy un planetario trionfo.
Oggi, 17 anni dopo, la serie è ancora in onda.
Stesso canale. Medesima formula. Molti personaggi son passati a miglior vita. Altri sono arrivati. Lei, Meredith Grey è ancora salda al comando.
Come e quando finirà questo show non è dato saperlo ma 18 stagioni dopo è forse il caso di rendergli in qualche modo omaggio.
Non credete?

Premetto che, pur non essendo esattamente il genere di show che prediligo, ho assistito alle mirabolanti storie di Meredith & co per oltre un decennio.
Poco oltre la decima stagione ho mollato. Non per mancanza di stimoli o fiducia ma perchè dopo un decennio era il caso di sganciarsi da un prodotto che stava diventando più un abitudine che una voluttuosa scelta.
.
Da blogger seriale quale mi propongo di essere, è fondamentale approcciarsi a questi fenomeni con oggettività, cercando di capirne i segreti di un cosi prolungato e duraturo successo.
La risposta, forse, sta nella sua creatrice, quella Shonda Rhymes che oggi è divenuta un marchio, un impero chiamato Shondaland che sta sfondando anche oltre Grey's Anatomy.
Basterebbe guardare agli altri successi di Shonda per capire perchè Grey's Anatomy è diventata Grey's Anatomy.
La serie è un combinato disposto di temi, personaggi ed atmosfere che hanno fatto scuola.
This is Us, ad esempio, credo affondi ampiamente le radici in Grey's Anatomy, divenendo una sua naturale evoluzione.
Tutti i prodotti di Shonda, altro non sono che una naturale evoluzione anch'essi della serie mamma di tutte le serie della sua autrice.
Perchè ha avuto cosi tanto successo?
Il segreto, forse, sta in una ovvietà.
Quando metti insieme tragedie e amori, drammi fortissimi e sogni, la gente tende ad immedesimarsi, ad appassionarsi, a riconoscersi in vicende che scorrono davanti ai propri occhi.
Meredith Grey era una specializzanda alle prime armi. Sprovveduta, forse ingenua, giovane.
Si è innamorata. Di un uomo sposato. Di un uomo dal "rango" più alto. Di un'icona del micromondo del Seattle Grace Hospital.
La sua storia ha dato speranza a tante persone?

E cosi via su tutti gli altri personaggi.
E forse, sono loro un altro segreto dello show.
Il fatto che 17 anni dopo siano rimasti in pochissimi senza che la serie perdesse di smalto (come invece accaduto, ad esempio, a The Walking Dead) la dice lunga su quanto siano stati abili gli autori a tenere vivo il fuoco dell'interesse intorno a nuovi protagonisti.
Questa abilità ha permesso alla serie di ravvivarsi ma soprattutto di creare momenti attesi, poi diventati cult.
Molti protagonisti principali sono morti o hanno abbandonato lo show.
Non parliamo di comprimari ma di protagonisti, un po come accadeva (con le dovute proporzioni) con Game of Thrones.
L'idea che un protagonista lasci la nostra serie preferita ci rattrista ma spesso è un valido motivo per restare a guardarla.
Ecco.

Contare su un cast tutto sommato molto qualificato ha permesso allo show di vivere di rendita, di permettersi qualche errore, di adeguare qualche script agli ottimi interpreti, di sfruttare l'onda emotiva che si veniva a creare intorno ad un personaggio piuttosto che un altro.
Non è sempre possibile (ancora una volta The Walking Dead Docet).
Questo articolo non vuole essere un esegesi della serie perfetta, tutt'altro (o non l'avrei abbandonata qualche anno fa) ma una oggettiva presa d'atto che se Grey's Anatomy è in piedi da 17 anni, qualche motivo ci sarà.
La qualità c'è stata, a tratti, ma c'è stata. La pozione magica è stata trovata. Gli errori quasi sempre perdonati.
E pazienza se abbiamo assistito a più disastri e tragedie in questi 17 anni che in decine di serie post apocalittiche, la sospensione dell'incredulità ci ha sempre preservato da ogni razionale abbandono.
Fino al prossimo disastro.

As usual today I bring you a new Preview of an article that in a few days or weeks you will see in the Mind of a SerialFiller, my blog entirely focused on the world of TV series and of which, for some months, I decided to give you constantly, in advance of what I will publish, most of the posts you will see on www.serialfiller.org.

Today I'm here to legitimize (or delegitimize) one of the most watched, loved, discussed TV series in the history of TV.
It was March 27, 2005 when ABC (still the dominant broadcaster in those pre-Netflix days) aired the pilot of Grey's Anatomy.
The then semi-unknown Shonda Rhymes was at the helm of what would become one of the most recognizable series in the entire history of world television.
A first season of just 9 episodes was enough to make Grey's Anatomy a global triumph.
Today, 17 years later, the series is still on the air.
Same channel. Same formula. Many characters have passed on. Others have arrived. She, Meredith Grey, is still firmly in charge.
How and when this show will end is unknown but 18 seasons later it is perhaps the case to pay homage in some way.

I'll preface this by saying that while it's not exactly my favorite kind of show, I've been watching the amazing stories of Meredith & co for over a decade.
Just past the tenth season, I gave up. Not for lack of stimulus or confidence but because after a decade it was the case to disengage from a product that was becoming more of a habit than a voluptuous choice.

As a serial blogger which I propose to be, it is essential to approach these phenomena with objectivity, trying to understand the secrets of such a prolonged and lasting success.
The answer, perhaps, lies in its creator, the Shonda Rhymes that today has become a brand, an empire called Shondaland that is breaking through even beyond Grey's Anatomy.
You only have to look at Shonda's other successes to understand why Grey's Anatomy has become Grey's Anatomy.
The series is a combination of themes, characters and atmospheres that have set the standard.
This is Us, for example, I believe is largely rooted in Grey's Anatomy, becoming a natural evolution of it.
All of Shonda's products are nothing more than a natural evolution of the mother series of all the series of its author.
Why has it been so successful?
The secret, perhaps, lies in the obvious.
When you put together tragedies and loves, strong dramas and dreams, people tend to identify, to get passionate, to recognize themselves in the events that flow before their eyes.
Meredith Grey was a novice resident. Reckless, perhaps naive, young.
She fell in love. With a married man. With a man of the highest "rank." With an icon of the Seattle Grace Hospital micro-world.
Did her story give hope to so many people?

And so on to all the other characters.
And perhaps, they are another secret of the show.
The fact that 17 years later there are very few of them left without the series losing its luster (as happened, for example, to The Walking Dead) says a lot about how skillful the authors have been at keeping the focus of interest alive around new protagonists.
This ability has allowed the series to revive but also to create expected moments, then become cult.
Many main protagonists have died or left the show.
We are not talking about comprimari but of protagonists, a bit like it happened (with due proportions) with Game of Thrones.
The idea that a protagonist leaves our favorite series saddens us but often it is a valid reason to stay and watch it.
Here it is.

Counting on a cast that is, on the whole, very qualified has allowed the show to live off its profits, to allow itself a few mistakes, to adapt a few scripts to the excellent performers, to exploit the emotional wave that was created around one character rather than another.
It is not always possible (once again The Walking Dead Docet).
This article is not intended to be an exegesis of the perfect series, far from it (or I would not have abandoned it a few years ago) but an objective statement that if Grey's Anatomy is standing for 17 years, there will be some reason.
The quality has been there, at times, but it has been there. The magic potion has been found. The mistakes almost always forgiven.
And patience if we have witnessed more disasters and tragedies in these 17 years than in dozens of post-apocalyptic series, the suspension of disbelief has always preserved us from any rational abandonment.
Until the next disaster.
