Vi avevo già parlato di The Premise in questo post di first impression ma oggi voglio ulteriormente allargare lo sguardo verso una serie che secondo me è stata poco apprezzata e pubblicizzata.
Io ci ho provato a farvela conoscere attraverso quel post di cui vi parlavo in precedenza ma anche attraverso una serie di menzioni lungo lo speciale 2021 di cui oramai conoscerete tutto (per chi non avesse ancora fatto un giro vi rimando al tag link dello speciale).
Oggi voglio andare un po più nel dettaglio di questo piccolissimo evento seriale composto da 5 episodi soltanto ma composito e complesso nella sua ambizione.

Dietro la macchina da presa e dietro ogni singolo script c'è BJ Novak, autore/attore che avrà pure una faccia da schiaffi ma che qui ci ha mostrato di che pasta sia fatto.
Cosa ha voluto costruire con questi 5 episodi il nostro caro BJ?
Molto, molto facile oramai fare dei paragoni con Black Mirror. Qualsiasi serie tv che abbia all'interno un qualsiasi elemento distopico o uno sguardo più originale sulla realtà e l'attualità, finisce, volente o nolente, per scontare il paragone con la celebre serie britannica.
Anche The Premise, suo malgrado, è finita in questo frullatore, ed è forse proprio questo che le ha fatto scontare una pena non indifferente.
The Premise non è Black Mirror e molto poco ha a che vedere con gli intenti della serie di Brooker.
Laddove Black Mirror ci metteva in guardia sui pericoli derivanti dall'uso e abuso della tecnologia nelle nostre vite e nelle nostre scelte, immaginando un futuro possibile ma ancora marginalmente lontano, The Premise fa emergere sin da subito le contraddizioni ed i pericoli insiti in noi stessi, cittadini del mondo contemporaneo, già oggi.
La tecnologia non è centrale.
Il confronto fra noi e le nostre scelte è più umanizzato.
Il focus su quanto sia la società a travolgerci piuttosto che noi a governarla, è assolutamente in primo piano.
E quindi torniamo alla domanda:
Cosa ha voluto costruire con questi 5 episodi il nostro caro BJ?

Il nostro caro BJ ha evidenziato con forza quanti punti di non ritorno abbiamo oramai raggiunto, in nome del consumismo o dell'apparenza, in nome della superficialità o dell'esibizionismo, punti di non ritorno che ci dipingono ogni giorno, e sempre più, come esseri umani facenti parte di una specie, di una razza, di un popolo, di una comunità sempre più distratta, apatica, disumanizzata e disumanizzante.
Lo abbiamo visto in varie occasioni in questi 5 episodi.
Attraverso le storie raccontate in The Premise abbiamo assistito a dei capovolgimenti surreali ma molto molto possibili, se non addirittura molto probabile, nella società odierna.
L'odio razziale messo sullo sfondo rispetto ad un film hard amatoriale.
La diffidenza verso una persona in lutto.
L'amore impossibile nei meandri della vita di una popstar.
L'impossibile perdono di un bambino bullizzato divenuto magnate dell'hitech.

Very very timely preview of In the Mind of a Serialfiller today.

I already told you about The Premise in this first impression post but today I want to further expand my look at a series that I think has been under-appreciated and under-publicized.
I tried to let you know about it through that post I mentioned earlier but also through a series of mentions along the special 2021 of which you know everything by now (for those who have not yet taken a tour I refer you to the tag link of the special).
Today I want to go into a little more detail about this small serial event consisting of only 5 episodes but composite and complex in its ambition.

Behind the camera and behind every single script there is BJ Novak, author/actor who may have a slap-face but here he showed us what he is made of.
What did our dear BJ want to build with these 5 episodes?
Very, very easy now to make comparisons with Black Mirror. Any TV series that has within it any dystopian element or a more original look at reality and current affairs, ends up, willingly or unwillingly, to discount the comparison with the famous British series.
Even The Premise, despite itself, has ended up in this blender, and perhaps this is what made it serve a not inconsiderable sentence.
The Premise is not Black Mirror and has very little to do with the intentions of Brooker's series.
Where Black Mirror warned us about the dangers of the use and abuse of technology in our lives and in our choices, imagining a possible but still marginally distant future, The Premise immediately brings out the contradictions and dangers inherent in ourselves, citizens of the contemporary world, even today.
Technology is not central.
The confrontation between us and our choices is more humanized.
The focus on how much society is overwhelming us rather than us governing it is absolutely front and center.
And so we return to the question:
What did our dear BJ want to build with these 5 episodes?

Our dear BJ has forcefully highlighted how many points of no return we have now reached, in the name of consumerism or appearance, in the name of superficiality or exhibitionism, points of no return that paint us every day, and more and more, as human beings belonging to a species, a race, a people, a community that is increasingly distracted, apathetic, dehumanized and dehumanizing.
We have seen this at various times over these five episodes.
Through the stories told in The Premise we have witnessed surreal but very very possible, if not very likely, reversals in today's society.
Racial hatred put in the background compared to an amateur hardcore movie.
The distrust of a grieving person.
The impossible love in the meandering life of a pop star.
The impossible forgiveness of a bullied child turned hitech mogul.
