Come di consueto oggi vi porto dentro una nuova Anteprima di un articolo che fra qualche giorno o settimana vedrete Nella Mente di un SerialFiller, il mio blog interamente incentrato sul mondo delle serie tv e di cui, da qualche mese, ho deciso di regalarvi costantemente, in anticipo su quello che pubblicherò, gran parte dei post che vedrete su www.serialfiller.org.
Alcuni problemi erano emersi già in occasione del pilot (qui trovata la recensione completa dei primi 2 episodi) ma avevo, personalmente, provato a smorzarli in favore di una lettura "costruttrice" degli eventi narrati.
Che la scelta degli autori sia quella di prendersi il tempo necessario per introdurre storyline e personaggi mi sembra abbastanza chiaro. Scelta che reputo, tendenzialmente saggia, purchè, prima o poi, si inizi a spingere sull'acceleratore.
Il terzo episodio, dal titolo Aldar, non sembra risolvere i problemi, i dubbi, che erano emersi in occasione della visione dei primi 2 episodi. Per dirla in maniera più semplice ed estesa, anche Aldar si mostra con gli stessi pregi e gli stessi difetti (ammesso che siano pregi e difetti quelli denotati) delle prime 2 puntate.
I personaggi faticano ad "arrivare" al cuore dello spettatore, gli effetti visivi stupiscono molto (specie nella bellissima sequenza di approdo al porto di Numenor), tutte le storyline avanzano di qualche passo, il finale offre un cliffanger che promette grandi cose, c'è pochissimo spazio per il furore effimero o concreto della battaglia, la mappa aiuta nella comprensione del dove siamo, le interconnessioni tra i personaggi iniziano a palesarsi, il ritmo non agevola la visione, la sensazione che con quel budget si potesse fare molto meglio è lì, resta con noi fortissima.
Tutto molto simile, quasi identico, in termini di esperienza visiva ed emozionale, a quanto avevamo assistito all'esordio.
Non è detto che sia un male ma, di certo, non è detto che sia un bene.
In molti parlano di fan fiction, altre persone, anche molto attente e competenti, parlano di grande flop. Si sbagliano? Esagerano?
Non credo si sbaglino ma credo, al tempo stesso, che esagerino.
Altri, al contrario, apprezzano la lunga fase di costruzione e ammirano i fasti digital-visivi che questo kolossal riesce ad offrire. Si sbagliano? Esagerano?

If the controversy over the debut of The Rings of Power rages on, there must be a reason.
If House of The Dragon (review of the most recent episode here), which in parallel travels on more adventurous, adrenaline-fueled, and crackling tracks, seems to be more popular with audiences, there will be a reason.
If with about $50 to $60 million lavished to package each episode, audiences expected more, there will be a reason.
If readers of the book press on, there will be a reason.
If non-readers of the book denote widespread problems, there will be a reason.
If after 3 episodes we struggle to recognize a single character, there will be a reason.
There will be a reason if, almost halfway through the run, The Rings of Power struggles so hard to make its way into the hearts of viewers.
Some problems had already emerged in the pilot (full review of the first 2 episodes can be found here) but I had, personally, tried to dampen them in favor of a "constructive" reading of the narrated events.
That the choice of the authors is to take their time to introduce storyline and characters seems to me quite clear. A choice that I think, tends to be a wise one, as long as, sooner or later, they start pushing on the accelerator.
The third episode, titled Aldar, does not seem to solve the problems, the doubts, that had emerged upon viewing the first 2 episodes. To put it more simply and extensively, Aldar also shows itself with the same merits and flaws (assuming they are merits and flaws that are denoted) of the first 2 episodes.
The characters struggle to "get" to the viewer's heart, the visual effects amaze a great deal (especially in Numenor's beautiful harbor landing sequence), all storylines advance a few steps, the finale offers a cliffanger that promises great things, there is very little room for the ephemeral or concrete fury of battle, the map helps in the understanding of where we are, the interconnections between characters begin to become apparent, the pacing does not make it easy to watch, the feeling that much better could have been done with that budget is there, it stays with us very strong.
All very similar, almost identical in terms of visual and emotional experience, to what we had witnessed in the debut.
That's not necessarily a bad thing, but it's certainly not necessarily a good thing.
Many people are talking about fan fiction; other people, even very careful and knowledgeable people, are talking about a big flop. Are they wrong? Are they exaggerating?
I don't think they are wrong but I think, at the same time, they exaggerate.
Others, on the contrary, appreciate the long construction phase and admire the digital-visual splendor that this kolossal manages to offer. Are they wrong? Do they exaggerate?
