La maranta ci colpisce per il disegno particolare delle foglie che sono grandi ed ovali e molto variegate di bianco, crema, argento su sfondo verde scuro in marezzature diverse da un esemplare all'altro. Oltre a essere piante bellissime hanno una caratteristica curiosa di sera si alzano rivolgendo la punta verso l'alto per sfruttare al massimo l'umidità notturna racchiusa nell'aria ,e la mattina dopo si ripiegano 45 gradi rispetto al picciolo che le porta prendendo d'aspetto piangente all'ingiù.
Anche la quantità di luce può influenzare questo fenomeno portandole a incrinarsi se è eccessiva e lasciando, le più erette nelle giornate nuvolose invernali.
Le marante sono piante erbacee perenni con radici rizomatose da cui spuntano foglie radicali e sottili fusti,le grandi foglie hanno una forma ovale arrotondata, e colore verde brillante e hanno stupendi disegni ,il consiglio che posso darvi che al momento dell'acquisto di scegliere esemplari dai disegni nitidi con foglie turgide ed erette senza macchie o seccumi e che non abbiano già riempito completamente il vaso con i piccioli delle foglie.
Naturalmente la Maranta proviene dalle regioni umide tropicali dell'America in cui vive nel sottobosco ,detesta pertanto gli ambienti secchi che ne accartocciano il fogliame e le portano rapidamente a una brutta fine. Per fornire la giusta umidità dobbiamo allestire un sottovaso di diametro doppio rispetto al vaso e riempirlo con uno strato di argilla sopra il quale appoggiare il vaso l'argilla deve essere sempre coperta da un dito d'acqua.
