Guess the Aperture!
About The Photo
This is my friend Chef Nick of The Tahoe Dinner Bell. He's kind of a big deal... He's a private chef and I'm not supposed to talk about some of the clients he's cooked for, but they are some of the biggest names you know. His food is always unbelievably amazing!
This photos is from a fishing trip he and some other friends and I were on last year. He asked me if I could get him a new portrait with the trout he caught (and later cooked of course) and I happily obliged.

What is Aperture?
Aperture can be defined as the opening in a lens through which light passes to enter the camera. It is an easy concept to understand if you just think about how your eyes work. As you move between bright and dark environments, the iris in your eyes either expands or shrinks, controlling the size of your pupil.
f-stops are a way of describing the size of the aperture for a particular photo. For example, f/2.8 is larger than f/4 and much larger than f/11.
For more information, examples and videos see Understanding Aperture in Photography NOTE: Some cameras such as cell phones have very atypical numbering for aperture.
RULES & HOW TO PLAY
- For this Metadata Monday I would like you to guess the aperture setting that was used to take the photo. For example, you might guess “f/2.8”, or “f/11.” What makes this tricky is that some cameras allow 1/3 increments, and others 1/2 and some cell phones often have fixed apertures.
- Only one guess per person, per post.
- No editing your guess - you have to commit!
- Metadata has been stripped from the pictures, so don’t bother looking for the EXIF!
- We are not required to tell you what kind of camera was used, or what time of day the photo was taken at, or whether filters were involved (this adds to the mystery and the challenge!)
- For this game you have until Wednesday at 1 PM PST
- Scoring: Is done using Hive Tips on your responses.
My scoring will be:
12 Hive for the first one with the right answer.
5 Hive for first who was the closest to the right answer.
If no one gets it right, the winner will be the one closest to the number.
