I bought a container of hornworms about 10 days ago and these things grow so fast. There were a bunch of the worms in the container and I was feeding Yoshi like 2 to 3 of them a day, but now they are way too big for him to eat. They should be getting ready to to form their cocoons soon though and my daughter wanted to see what kind of moth or butterfly they become, so I am trying to see if I can get them to form a cocoon now.
I think if Yoshi tried to eat them now that they are this size, their little feet would latch onto the inside of his mouth or even his tongue. I dropped one of them onto the carpet when I was taking these photos and those little claws latched onto the carpet so tight that I needed to almost rip it off the carpet and I thought that it would split the worm in half. They have pretty sharp claws on the feet and could probably do some damage if ingested now.
I am debating on whether or not I will get another one of the containers of these worms. Mainly because they stink pretty bad. Their food block is pretty disgusting and they just eat the block and poop it back out to the ground below them. Then when you need to open the container to get one of the worms out, you have to tip it upside down so the poop goes all over the place in the container and sometimes the worms get a bit slimy. It's pretty nasty.
I may end up throwing these worms out because they don't have anymore food and I don't know how close they were to starting their cocoons. I will let them go outside, but I think they will die pretty quickly because it is supposed to snow again in a couple days. Maybe with a future batch of these guys, I will be able to get them to turn into a butterfly.
