What to do on a sweltering summer Monday afternoon in Japan?
Stay at home and put the air-conditioner on at full blast is one very attractive option... so any alternative ought to be even more attractive to tempt me out into the midday sun...
It turned out that some good-time gals had a holiday today and wanted to eat pizza and play chess with the #PubChessBluffer ... so, all things considered, it would have been rude not to, and dammit, when all's said and done, an English chap in the Far East must do his damnedest to do his duty for King and Country, grab his pith helmet, and head out into the midday sun come what may...
Mad Dogs and Englishmen
(by Noel Coward)
The Japanese don't care to,
The Chinese wouldn't dare to,
In the Philippines
There are lovely screens
To protect you from the glare...
But mad dogs and Englishmen
Go out in the midday sun...
Today, however, our company was made up of young ladies from all three of those exotic climes, as well as one doughty and stoical Englishman. They had all braved the midday sun to gather and congregate at the agreed assignation, a certain well air-conditioned shopping mall in a suburb of Hiroshima...
Pizza (& Laughter) Unlimited
We hung out for the afternoon in an Italian joint that offers a fixed priced "tabehoudai" ["all-you-can-eat"] pizza deal, screened from the midday sun and nicely chilled by the shopping mall and restaurant air-conditioning, no doubt doing our bit to accelerate global warming (along with those jet-setting eco-preachers we all love and admire).
But I digress. The photo nicely captures the atmosphere of the afternoon - chilling out over endless servings of pizza, a few beers, a game or two of chess, and a whole lotta laughter, gossip, and fun.
Cheers!
