Magome Catholic Church is a ten minute walk away from our hotel so we strolled over to have a look at it yesterday evening. It was built in 1931 in a kind of Japanese Gothic style and dedicated to Saint Michael Archangel. Nagasaki has an interesting Christian heritage from the time of the Portuguese who first arrived in Kyushu in 1543. Christianity was suppressed and quite a few Christians who did not publicly revoke their faith were crucified. For the next few hundred years Christianity went underground in Kyushu.
