A lot of people who are visiting South Africa tend to not visit the Wild coast of the Eastern Cape province. It almost feels a bit like a pity since the province is such a beauty and a little bit more unspoiled and regulated. On the other hand, safety is more of a challenge every now and then since the contrast of rich and poor is very noticeable here. But once there and just taking in the parts of nature, this is a super awesome corner to hang out in.
One of the things that I found just really weird was that there were cows walking over the beach all of a sudden. They are just looking for sweet fresh water and the easiest way to get from A to B is walking over the beach. Actually it is not that weird and it makes a lot of sense even, but for me this whole sight was new. In the Netherlands, cows are in the fields eating grass. And these guys didn’t mind the whole situation and even had their goat friends with them.
To me it was new and funny. What was even more weird here is that I was just gazing in the distance over the sea and I saw a lot of water movement in the distance. It was like a big splash coming from a boat that was coming closer rapidly. And just as fast as it was there, it had also disappeared again. So no boat for sure. Then I saw it again, with a big splash and a big tail. It was a whale just jumping out of the water! A whale just passing by. No tour for it, not special location, just the random sea. Then I saw two splashes and it was another whale. The splashes were gigantic.
It turned out this was a piece of the great humpback trekking in the season and it was humongous. Imagine that a humpback whale is the size of 13 elephants. And an elephant isn’t small already. What a splash and what a creature.
So no, no pictures from the whales because they came and went and were also in the distance. And the cows didn’t mind this whole spectacle and the fact that I was shouting out loud because I was so surprised to see whales.
I guess they were already used to the spectacle since they were already on the beach off and on. Everywhere it is all different!
