'Roadtripping with my two favorite Allies. Fully loaded we've got snacks and supplies. It's time to leave this town'
Everyone knows this song from the Red Hot Chilly Peppers and if you love a good roadtrip like me, you will totallt appreciate it with the whole setting passing by.
Brutal scenery, mountains passing by, driving into the big nothing. Golden Gate Highlands national park is located on the north east side of Lesotho but still in South Africa. There is only the R712 road passing through as a main road and you do not have to pay an entrance fee or toll booth money.
Desolate I would call the highlands. Raw mountains, hardly any plantation, the wind roaring over the mountaintops. No cellphone reception in miles. Not a place for your car to break down. On the other hand there were enough cars passing by and everyone was very friendly.
Around every corner there is something new. A new view, a new mountain, a new scenery. On top of the pass there is a hotel and a campsite with a couple of hiking trails. Sleeping above 2000 meters altitude. At the end of the world. I get it. The silence and calmness of the setting is almost overwhelming.
I stared out of the window of the car again into the next mountain raising in the distance.
'Just a mirror for the sun'
The Peppers continued to play and the scenery changed from desolate into green again.
