It's interesting how you travel to a country or city and notice lots of one particular type of object by that keeps on reappearing as you walk around. They're normally mundane objects that you probably see at home but never notice. Yet, in another particular city, they suddenly become part of that city's character.
For example, in Japan, their manhole covers are pretty much an art. Many are adorned with intricate designs representing their local landmark or custom. In Bologna in Italy, porticoes are part of the city'sk architecture. Walking along the porticoes is like walking in an open air museum.
In Cadiz in Spain, doorways caught my eye. Maybe it's the way the buildings are built, there's a set of outer big tall double doors, it's normally left open. Some of the doors are locked, and passer bys can admire the beautiful set of wooden doors a handle, many of which is like a piece of sculpture.
When the doors are left open, it leads into a hallway, tiled beautifully most of the time, that's what caught my eyes. The tiled floor extends upwards to the wall, usually in a complementing tile, up to the height of a person. Then there's a beautiful light that drops down from the ceiling.
And at the other end is a second set of doors. These are normally glass, fixed onto a beautiful frame. Each time I passed by one of these beautiful doorways, I took a peep from the streets, taking care not to trespass private property. Sometimes I see a lovely staircase leading up to the flats. Sometimes its a courtyard with plants, perhaps that's where residents gather for their daily chit chat. And sometimes there junk left there. I guess there are different types of residents, some who pay less regards to their living conditions.
With every doorway, I try to imagine who lives there? How long have they lived there? What are the flats like? And, which doorway would I like to go back home to every night.
What about you?
