Two years ago my wife was expatriated to Finland, and we used the opportunity to travel around the county. One of the trips was to the polar circle: Lapland, the land of Santa Claus! Of course, we were in hopes of seeing the Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis), but the sky was cloudy at night the whole time. Yet experience Lapland was amazing! we stood in glass igloos in the middle of the forest, experienced the Finish sauna, drove in the snow, saw "wild" reindeer (in fact, every reindeer in Finland belongs to a farmer, even if the roam free), and even met the "real" Santa Claus in person! Not seeing the Northern Lights is now just an excuse to go again to that beautiful region of Planet Earth!
