San Don Tar tradition is a tradition of Thai people of Khmer descent. It is where family members and relatives gather to make merit for their ancestors who have passed away. Similar to Thai Sart Day It is also known as the Khmer Sart Day, also known as the "San don tar" Tradition Day.
San Don Tar comes from the word San, meaning to pay respect to Don, meaning grandmother, Tar means grandfather. In the past, children who worked in different areas traveled back to their families together. to make merit and dedicate the merit to the ancestors Or another way is to show gratitude to the benefactor.
And the Khmer people believe that day the gates of the underworld will be opened so that those who are in hell can visit their relatives. So have prepared food, snacks, desert in the evening. In the morning, it will be taken to measure. It is believed that ghosts will come out of the underworld for 15 days, after which it is the day of San Don Tar, also known as Ben Thom. It is the day of the ritual. By preparing food, fruits, betel nuts, and cigarettes in several small krathongs(Banana leave box), put them in the krathongs and bring them to make merit in the morning. and the names of those who made merit and the names of the souls of the deceased were written and set fire to the paper and poured water to donate to charity
And in the evening There were abundant food preparations, including savory, sweet, and fruit dishes, and then lit incense sticks to summon the souls to come and eat the food that their children had prepared for them. Then, rice was delivered to deliver water by dividing the food offerings to place on the side of the road. After making offerings, they sat down to eat and chat happily.
