Today I decided to go for a relaxing evening walk along the Rhein. The Rhein is quite long and there are many places that you can go for a walk. Today's stop is at the small Harbour town of Gernsheim. In the summer there is a huge festival called FischerFest and the places gets pretty packed, but today it is off-peak and there are some people around, but it is quiet and a relaxing atmosphere.
You can actually park up very close to the river and the first thing you see are a couple of local pubs with many people sitting outside enjoying the spring weather. The ferry was already loaded and ready to cross and I made a short video of the crossing here.
Mostly the traffic seems to go in one direction toward Rheinland-Pfalz. I am not sure how much the ferry costs as I have never taken it. Walking around the harbour, there is lots of construction work going on. There are more restaurants with beer gardens but they are not open at this time.
The harbour is still being used to ship freight and a sign said that there are many people employed in this industry here. This was evident as you can see with all the huge containers stacked up. Gernsheim is quite an industrial town and transport hub, although I have come to the outskirts of the town before for strawberry and raspberry picking as there are quite a few farms too.
I continued my walk away from the harbour and down along the Rhein. It is a well maintained and clean path with many benches and sitting opportunities. There are some youths who are taking advantage of this. Alongside the river is well maintained also with all the trees looking freshly cut back so that there are no debris floating in the Rhein.
I pass the canoe launching point and capture some crepsular rays. I do like to capture crepsular rays as they are a great wonder to behold. I am not sure that I would be so keen to canoe in this huge river though.. as I continue my walk, there are many freight barges that pass me by in both directions. The river is very busy with these boats and I can many as I walk. I remember from my last walk there was one every 2 minutes. Today it was a little less frequent, but not far off. This gives you an idea of the traffic on this river.
After a decent walk, I head back to end my walk. However, I made a short detour to search for one of the Dutch fishing ships that were bought in 1913 and are still somewhere in the town. The last photo was my guess that is might have been one of these boats, but I'm not sure.
Have a great day!
