Typical range of 'personal items' types of second hand selling at these markets. Anything from Boxing Gloves, Sunglasses, fountain pens, watches, bags, wallets, fishing reels and more! The list is endless, what are you looking for?
Some very Thai ornaments in among this lot, with these statues and busts of Thailand's past kings. Vintage RayBans, but are they original?
An old telescope
A box full of jewelers eye-pieces embossed 'ROSS LONDON'. This box was tempting at 400thb, to sell on ebay for $1 each but then thought better of it.
Coming of age (not that old but already retro) Coke and Pepsi signs, or they can also look exactly like old signs, or can just be cleverly crafted and weathered to look antique, yet are actually new. If they look too good ... probably repro...
Selection (huge) of Japanese vintage toys, I picked up this TOYOTA racing car r/c toy (no controllers) for a buck fifty, great addition to a growing scale-toy car collection.
We did say eclectic, it doesn't get much more so than this. From rope, to old books, to vintage food transport canteens (those cylinders on the left, what are they called, anyone from Asia?), brass vases, ammo boxes, bombs? or is old gas cylinders? ....
An Elephant now I was so close to buying this it was so tempting and the cats would probably love it. If it's still there this weekend it could end up at home.
Sublimely eclectic again, this Bugatti kid's buggy sits among old remote controls and phone cases. Photo opportunities galore, want to put more effort into creating more wild Thai market photos.
There was a vendor on hand appearing very knowledgeable and proud of these guitars. Prices varied and many looked hand made.
700 Rai
A 'Rai' in Thailand is a measure of a unit of land. 1 Rai is approx. half a square acre. This market is so called as it occupies a vast piece of land (apparently 700 Rais of it). Although I believe the market only fills a fraction of that. Behind, and for another post - the land is unoccupied / uninhabited yet a paved road runs all the back to the mountains behind. However the main use is near the main road, a huge market sets up every Thurs-Sat of the week from 3pm - 10pm. It's a great place to go for a wonder around and see what you can find. Off the tourist map, there is a lot of eclectic items on offer at very much the 'local prices' There are some real bargains to be picked up, as we'll see in the photo descriptions of this short post today.
Eclectic is the Game
Such a fabulous market, probably one of the best outside of Bangkok for finding unusual, collectable, second hand, and wholesale-priced goods in small quantities. They sell second hand clothing from a dollar, old toys, musical instruments, a whole cornucopia of collectable dealers are regular there to sell their discoveries. If you enjoy finding odd little things at flea markets, you'd love it here. See what we can spot in the pictures, as there is never enough time to take in everything whilst there. Sometimes I will look through the pictures and find something I didn't see - it can be useful in finding things you missed and going back for them later, if someone else didn't spot them first!
More To Come!
This is not the first time NewtonClassics has posted photo-series from Thai markets, and we plan to do more! In fact from looking at these photos today, there is a lot further to go creatively in making some compositions of all the eclectic stuff around these markets. Next time I want to go with no shopping in mind, just the camera and see if we can come up with some interesting contrasts using all the crazy items around for sale!
Thanks for reading, supporting, voting, liking, following, commenting ... see you for the next one very soon, peace :)
