It's the first real nice day in a week or so, so I took advantage and got outside with my aunt and we worked on a project that we started a couple of weeks back, but haven't been able to get back to until today. This area is kind of weird and is dangerous for the tractor or riding mowers to go up and down this little embankment, so we are putting it to good use!
First up we started putting down weed control fabric to stop the grass. Then we started harvesting pine straw and leaves from the woods around us to put down as mulch. Can't beat free natural resources! Another big job was while I was hauling the mulch from the woods, my aunt dug a little trench to help with drainage that comes off the mountain when it rains to help direct the flow a bit. We went and got a bunch of rocks from around the property and filled in the trench like a french drain kind of thing and covered it with more mulch. You want to talk about a workout, well start farming, haha. We also lined some of the enbankment with rocks to help keep the mulch in place and to help keep it all from washing away.
Once that was all done, we transplanted some blueberry bushes from her garden over to the new spot and put them in the ground. So far we put 5 bushes in the ground. Some are already showing budding areas, so we are looking at a little fruitage this year! Super pumped! We are also putting in some fig trees that she has started in this area so we are planning and prepping for that. Basically our little road side fruit grove, lol.
It's nice to see it all come together. There is nothing better than looking at an almost finished project. We are doing to get some more weed control fabric and more mulch so we can finish up a couple of holes by the trees and to line more at the top of the embankment, then we may put in some more blueberry bushes. Haven't decided yet.
Anyway, with the markets not doing too much today, it was a good day to get outside and get some good ole homestead farm work done. I can tell you after all the hauling and lifting, I am wiped, lol. Not to mention it is starting to get a little hot and muggy, haha.
Anyway, until next time...
Be cool, be real, and always abide!
