Hey Vietnam friends,
Do you think its getting hot in here?
If you do not live in Vietnam, this week in Central Vietnam, we are experiencing heatwave conditions and if it gets too hot, it scares the cows who are already struggling with hay shortages. Heatwaves can also adversely affect the ability of mangoes to grow, and they don't thrive well in these conditions. Consumers will need to look out for fruit that are ripe and will be still fresh.
So what is causing this current heat wave?
There is something called the Foehn effect. The Foehn effect happens when cool when approach is a mountain range and gets blown up on side of it, this causes rain and the cool wind to become less humid, the wind cycles over the top the mountain drops the other side it then becomes heated in the sun.
Here's a link to a Wikipedia article on the topic : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Foehn_wind
Here's a map of the mountain range Vietnam, to the West there is Laos and Cambodia, and between them in Vietnam is a high mountain range. When the cool wet wind is blowing in from Laos and Cambodia it blows up the side of the mountain range, it reaches the top all the moisture has been taken out in the form of rain. The wind drops the other side's super heated by the rising Sun, and is very humid wind which flows back out towards the ocean.
Needless to say this all causes the temperatures on the other side of mountain range to rise, so place like Hanoi and Danang will get hot.... superduper hot.
Some places are saying that the temperature will raise to 35°C or 41°C, and have a humidity range of between 45% and 60%
This all poses high chances of explosions and fires across the country, which to a lot of people, to me is concerning and troublesome. They also are saying that thunderstorms may start to appear later on the week some rain may alleviate a little of this effect.
I do have to say that Vietnam has some very interesting weather patterns that happen. From the drenching monsoon seasons, where the rain never stops and comes at you from every direction, then to enter into this epic dry hot heat wave... It is very much two sides of an experience.
What are your thoughts on Vietnamese weather?
- Have you experienced the monsoon season here?
- Have experienced the super hot weather?
- have you experienced the beautiful spring and fall weather?
Thanks for take the time to read this article and hope to see you again soon.
Carpe diem!
