Hi fellow Hiveians,
Today I wanted to reminisce a little bit about the amazing trip my wife and I took to Italy many years ago.
Italian Memories
With the folks in the awesome Italian community here, it's no shock what beautiful country they live in but one thing that I miss is being there! I know that's the case with a lot of travel, you enjoy yourself a lot and end up looking for a time to go back. With Italy though, it was a magnificent trip. I fear that sadly it may not be the same country to go back to when we do make our way back there at some point in our later years of life.
The scenery and history are certainly remarkable, as most people on the internet can attest. Rome was such a pivotal piece of world history, buildings like the Colosseum here have significance in many peoples memories. I'm very happy that we got to walk on the street next to it and venture inside of it!
Ah now the piece of Rome that most of the Italians hate. The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier! Lol. We heard many times how ugly it was and how it didn't belong. It was still an incredible piece of architecture that will stand for many years. Will the people in another 2,000 years (if humans exist then and we haven't killed ourselves off.. lol) wonder at what this giant structure was for?
The Vatican is most certainly a beautiful place full of mystery, wonder, architecture and all kinds of stuff. It was really special to be able to stand there in Saint Peters square. We just missed the Pope giving a eulogy to the square when we were there, that would have been something cool to experience!
My absolute favorite though was the Italian countryside! It was a wonderful place full of delicious food, incredible people and a tenacity for keeping things local, sustainable and agriculture.
Looking up the hill at the beautiful city of Siena there is something to behold. The city has largely stayed the same over the hundreds of years since it was hit with a plague and even though that's a dark part if it's history, it's important nonetheless. Seeing how the people of the community have grown and kept the area surrounding it as farmland instead of developing a sprawling city is great. Farmland is important for Italians as it should be, since farmland is what keeps us fed and alive! Too much of this stuff is factory driven.
It was incredible all of the things that I learned when I was over there, in the heart of Wine Country in Tuscany. For example, putting roses at the ends of the rows of grapes here and in some places between helps alert the farmers when there is something amiss with the soil. Depending on the issue with the roses, such as discoloration, withering or other ailments, the farmers will know what they need to do in order to fix the soil and save their crop. That's some classic ingenuity for sure!
Thanks for taking a bit of a walk with me, even if it's in English. Dimentico tutti! Non posso parlare italiano nella cita habito. I guess I could spend more time in the community here and try to refresh my Italian! :D
Grazie mille tutti!
