Why do we need to learn writing?
Have you seen an artwork made of paper collage? What is the raw material for this type of artwork? They are small pieces of colourful papers.
These pieces appear nothing more than trash. They do not have any worth. Whether scattered or grouped, they do not deliver any meaning. However, if these papers are transformed into collage artwork, they become worthwhile, meaningful, unique and expensive.
What is the thing that transforms the worthless and meaningless bits and pieces into a meaningful representation? It is the thinking process. Some collage work delivers clearer and understandable meaning; others are vague and ambiguous.
The same is the case with writing. All of us have ideas and thoughts. These thoughts are no more worthy than bits and pieces of paper. They have no meaning, no understandable representation. The writing assembles these thoughts into a particular order and transforms them into a meaningful shape. If the thoughts are only grouped without any particular order, they are still ambiguous and not of much worth. However, if the same thoughts are assembled cogently in an intelligible fashion, the writing becomes awesome.
It is not an easy task to convert free-floating thoughts into concrete writing. It requires a process of Critical thinking. No good writing comes out without thinking critically about the topic.
Quote "The best way to teach critical thinking is to teach them to write" says Dr. Jordan.
Critical thinking is a process that involves the systematic evaluation of past and ongoing happenings. It helps to understand the situation objectively and gives us the power to make better decisions. People who are trained to do critical thinking not only act effectively in present but also design their future better.
Throughout our academic lives, we have been required to write but the irony is we never know why there is so much emphasis on writing. Are we supposed to write only for getting good grades? The answer is NO. The purpose of writing is not to acquire good grades in the realm of academics. Writing gives us the power to acquire a high reputation in all the spheres of life. It gives us the prowess in systematic thinking and sharpens our analytical powers. It makes our personalities effective in all the domains of life.
Learning to write is not only learning to write. Instead, learning to write is learning to think first. When a writeup is edited to make it coherent and precise, it is not only the writing that is improved but also our thoughts are refined. Coherent thoughts and pellucid writing directly impact our speaking prowess. Consequently, our personalities become impeccable and unfailing.
Quote"If you can think and speak and write, you are absolutely deadly", says Dr. Jordan.
Nothing in the world can stop the person from winning any battle who can think appropriately and speak aptly. The qualities of thinking and speaking pertinently make one worthwhile, effective, influential and invincible.
These qualities of victory can be learnt by learning to write.
