Arriving in Mucuchíes from the city of Mérida, about 15 minutes from the town, I met these local children whom we asked for directions to some hot springs that were in the area. The famous thermal waters of Musui, hot waters that emanate naturally at more than 3000 meters high and that can reach temperatures close to 80 degrees Celsius.
I was struck by the strong accent and markedly indigenous features of the children with whom we spoke.
Personally, I have no doubt about the great indigenous cultural influence that is still present throughout the Andean American region, but in Venezuela it is usually talked about in a past and very remote time and also refers to jungle places such as the Amazon, omitting from the outset what permeated that this country with the genetic and cultural heritage of the original peoples who occupied the geography we inhabit today for thousands of years.
When I see phenotypes with markedly indigenous features among the Venezuelan peasant communities distributed throughout the country, it will always be a reminder to me of what the first settlers of the ethnic melting pot that Venezuela is today were like.

Herencia
Llegando a Mucuchíes desde la ciudad de Mérida, a unos 15 minutos del centro del pueblo me encontré a estos niños lugareños a quienes le preguntamos por una dirección de unas aguas termales que quedaban en la zona. Las famosas aguas termales de la Musui, aguas calientes que emanan naturalmente a más de 3000 metros de altura y que pueden alcanzar temperaturas cercanas a los 80 grados centígrados.
Me llamó la atención su fuerte acento y sus rasgos marcadamente indígenas.
Personalmente no me cabe duda de la gran influencia cultural indigena aún presente en toda la región andina americana, pero en Venezuela se suele hablar sobre ella siempre en un tiempo pasado y muy remoto y además referida a lugares selváticos como el Amazonas, omitiendo de entrada lo permeada que este país con la herencia genética y cultural de los pueblos originarios que ocuparon la por miles de años la geografía que habitamos hoy.
Cuando veo fenotipos con rasgos marcadamente indígenas entre las comunidades campesinas venezolanas distribuidas a lo largo y ancho del país siempre será un recordatorio para mi de como eran los primeros pobladores del crisol étnico que es Venezuela en la actualidad.
