Daily Painting #23 — A Literal Shit Storm (and a Nail Polish Bottle)
Ok folks… not gonna lie… today was a SHIT STORM — literally and figuratively.
There are 160K people without power, schools are on strike tomorrow, trees down everywhere, and the person four houses up had their bins out early… those bins are now EMPTY and the rubbish is somewhere in the neighbourhood.
We had a storm of epic proportions here today. Brisbane is rather battered
ARE YOU IN BRISBANE?! Because… YIKES.
Some suburbs got 8 cm hail, others got 11 cm giant murder hailstones.
Ok ok… I’m being dramatic (artistic), but it was one of those classic QLD PM storms where:
- the sun is blazing,
- the humidity is revolting,
- the air is heavy,
- and you KNOW something is about to go down.
I walked outside to back the car out for school run… bright sunshine.
30 seconds later, while waiting for the garage door to lower, the car moved.
A gust from the left.
I turned my head and:
- leaves blowing
- rain starting to slant
- bins flying
- and about 200m down the road, that burnt-sienna haze you get when the storm front hits, with pure black sky under it
I reversed FAST and drove, because I had kids STANDING OUT IN IT.
The storm was behind me so I had a clear-ish run except for the insane wind.
Branches falling, bins rolling across the road, bikes down.
Got to school → kids soaked → grabbed them → parked under shelter until it passed.
The storm moved so fast it was gone in 10 minutes.
By ballet drop-off, the roads were dry and the sky was blue again.
Only in Queensland.
the damage bill will be INSANE!!!
🎨 The Painting (such as it is…)
Not super happy with this one — but hey, daily challenge rules:
I post whatever I get, even the “meh” ones.
Materials / Colours
- Underpainting: Burnt Sienna
- Background: Cobalt + Raw Umber + White
- Foreground: Whatever weird neutral happened today
- Bottle: Magenta, white, blue-shadow mixes, and a smidge of warm cream
Not my fave, but it exists — and that’s what matters for daily painting #23.
The Anxiety of a Daily Challenge
How cranky would it be to mess up painting #23 and break the entire month streak because I lost power?
That is exactly my MO — smash the first ¾ of a challenge then miss ONE day.
Still not convinced I’ll make it to 30… but I’d like any fail to be because I am an idiot, not because a storm blew half the suburb into Oz.
More storms predicted tomorrow.
Wish me luck.
And power.
