Hi folks 🙂
Well today we have a slightly different post.
I have a quick little daily painting based on a photo that posted the other day. I asked if I could paint it for my daily series and the answer was yes — so here it is.
It’s a pretty gnarly derelict hallway in a derelict building. I shifted the mood slightly and leaned into some darker feels, but really I just wanted to capture the broken door, the overgrown garden pushing in from outside, and that very blunt EXIT sign hanging above it all.
This is a small canvas panel, so there isn’t a lot of room for extra detail. It really had to be about shape, tone, and atmosphere rather than description. It took about an hour or so to do... so again... not a lot of time for super detailed work...
Palette used:
My standard palette for these daily pieces:
- Black & White
- Dioxazine Purple
- Cadmium Red Light
- Ultramarine Blue
- Cadmium Yellow Medium
- My two greens - phthalo and chromium oxide
- Burnt Sienna
- Raw Umber
- Burnt Umber
I needed a bit of raw umber for this one in particular — there’s a lot of muted grime and quiet dirt in the subject, and it helped keep everything grounded and slightly uncomfortable...
The Day That is...
Today is the Saturday before Christmas. I went to the gym early to avoid all the shopping chaos and people stealing all the parks. It ended up being a pretty heavy session, so I’m not sure I’ll be up to much this afternoon.
That said… I do have another one of the derelict airfield photos ready to paint. Totally not my usual subject matter — but that’s part of the appeal. I’m enjoying stepping slightly outside my comfort zone with these.
**Anyway — what do you think of the different subject material? **
I’m finding I quite like it.
I have some other more different paintings here... i might actually go back and post some of them... i like more creative pieces i just don't always have room in the new studio area to paint them as i have lost my huge desk in this new set up. Anyway, hope you are all having a good run into xmas
