Who doesn't know the popular symbol of peace? I don't think there is anyone today who sees it and doesn't associate it directly with the word peace, no matter what language they speak. Do you know of any other symbol that has such scope?
¿Sabes cuál es su verdadero significado?
Do you know what it really means?
The symbol of peace was designed in 1958 by the British Gerald Holtom for the first Nuclear Disarmament march that took place in the United Kingdom.
Initially it was used for a campaign for Nuclear Disarmament that demanded that the authorities of the world dismantle nuclear weapons that threatened humanity. The communication impact of the symbol was such that it was quickly used in the United States as an anti-war symbol and later worldwide as a symbol of peace.
Its own author gave two interpretations to the design. The first is that it is a representation of the letters D and N (for Nuclear Disarmament) according to the maritime flag alphabet, also known as the semaphore alphabet.
While the other interpretation given by the author, points out that it is a graphic representation of himself, with his arms extended outwards and downwards, "in an attitude of desperation, just like the character standing in front of the firing squad in the painting The Firing Squad of May 3, by Francisco de Goya y Lucientes".
