Clearly, the title is sufficiently striking and alarming not to go unnoticed. Perhaps it will generate some resistance in some readers, or it may be the link that confirms multiple suspicions about why it is so difficult as a society in Latin America to rid ourselves of the worst of our social characteristics. One of these is undoubtedly xenophobia. Or to put it more simply but forcefully, fear of the foreigner. Of the outsider, the stranger, the migrant.
This is no small thing, in fact, it is quite a long topic; one that could easily take up a few posts. Mainly because of its countless repercussions: such as the development of poverty on the continent, social immobility, the dictatorships and wars that have plagued the continent, illegal prostitution, drug trafficking, ecological and environmental problems, and a host of other underlying causes and sub-causes. However, the real focus is on a scourge that we all, or almost all of us, have: the terror of the unknown. And how easy it is to become infected with human cruelty and values that bring us closer to the sociopathic side than to the empathetic and warm side.
And this is not to say or point out in any way that we are to blame for being "bad" for certain reasons, ethnicities or nationalities, not at all. What I am saying is that we are a sub-continent plagued by immigrants from day one. Let us remember that the crossbreeding between Europeans and indigenous people, as well as between blacks brought from continental Africa and indigenous people, was the reason for the mestizaje: the ethnic type that overwhelmingly dominates the vast region that stretches from Mexico in the north to Tierra del Fuego in the southern Antarctic.
Claramente, el título es lo suficientemente llamativo y alarmante como para no pasar desapercibido. Quizá, genere cierta resistencia en algunos lectores, o directamente sea el nexo que confirme múltiples sospechas sobre por qué es tan difícil como sociedad en latinoamérica desprendernos de las peores de nuestras características sociales. Una de éstas, sin lugar a dudas, es la xenofobia. O dicho con más simple pero determinando contundencia, el miedo al extranjero. Al "outsider", el forastero, el migrante.
Esto no es poca cosa, de hecho, es un tema bastante largo; que tranquilamente podría dar para unos cuantos posts. Debido, principalmente, a sus incontables repercusiones: como el desarrollo de la pobreza en el continente, la inamovilidad social, las dictaduras y guerras que han azotado al continente; la prostitución ilegal, narcotráfico, problemas ecológicos y ambientales, y asó un montón más de causas y sub causas subyacentes. No obstante, el verdadero enfoque pasa por un flagelo que tenemos todos o casi todos: el terror hacia lo desconocido. Y cómo de fácil es contagiarse con la crueldad humana y los valores que nos acercan más al lado sociópata que al lado empático y cálido.
Y es que, con esto no quiero decir o señalar de modo alguno que la culpa pasa por ser "malos" por determinadas razones, etnias o nacionalidades, de ninguna manera. Lo que sostengo, es que somos un sub continente plagado de inmigrantes desde el día 1. Recordemos, que los cruces entre europeos e indígenas, así como entre negros traídos del África continental y los indígenas, fueron la razón del mestizaje: el tipo étnico que domina abrumadoramente la región extensa que abarca desde México en el norte hasta Tierra del Fuego en el sur antártico.
Now, it is enough just to look at the absolutely deplorable hardships with which the different governments, citizens and even organisations, supposedly "non-profit", put the millions of migrants who have reported, through different sources, humiliations, humiliations of all kinds, legal and bureaucratic impediments; even of a blackmailing and immoral nature: Such as human trafficking, child prostitution and labour exploitation unregulated by any body, or with the complicit and complacent gaze of the authorities who corruptly benefit from exploitation.
I want to make a clarification that is as blunt as it is true: I am not a leftist, nor a communist. Much less a socialist. What is more, those who have read me know that I am a person with serious problems with the powers that be almost everywhere. A nonconformist without qualms and a critic of authoritarian, dictatorial and fascist-communist systems everywhere. That said, I continue. Haiti, Nicaragua, El Salvador, Honduras, Colombia, Mexico, Peru, Venezuela and now Argentina, are the countries that are leading the mobilisation of human beings within the same continent from their countries of origin to others with better economic, social, educational and, above all, opportunities.
Xenophobia is a disgusting scourge, and yes, I say that categorically. Because we should be ashamed, as the children of migrants that the vast majority of us are, to repeat such inhuman prejudiced behaviour. Without going so far away, Venezuela, the country where I live and which for the last 8 years (the last 8 to be exact) has been experiencing a series of quite alarming migrations of its population to other latitudes, has historically been a welcoming country for those who chose to do so. All of us Venezuelans, I mean since we were children, have been or have known children of migrants from almost anywhere, but especially from Colombia. What's more, Colombians represent the bulk of all the emigration established in Venezuela... And I'm not talking about the past, but the present!
Ahora bien, basta solo con fijarnos con la calidad de penurias absolutamente deplorables con la los distintos gobiernos, ciudadanos e incluso hasta organizaciones, supuestamente "sin fines de lucro" hacen pasar a los millones de migrantes que han reportado, por distintas fuentes humillaciones, vejaciones de todo tipo, impedimentos legales y burocráticos; incluso hasta de índole chantajista e inmoral: como la trata de persona, la prostitución infantil y la explotación laboral no regulada por ningún ente, o con la plácida mirada cómplice de las autoridades que corruptamente se benefician de la explotación.
Quiero hacer una aclaratoria tan tajante como verdadera: no soy de izquierdas, ni comunista. Muchísimo menos socialista. Es más, quienes me han leído, saben que soy una persona con graves problemas con el Poder establecido en casi todas partes. Un inconforme sin reparos y un críticos a los sistemas autoritarios, dictatoriales y fascistas-comunistas en cualquier parte. Aclarado el tema, prosigo. Haití, Nicaragua, El Salvador, Honduras, Colombia, México, Perú, Venezuela y ahora la Argentina, son los países que más encabezan la movilización de seres humanos dentro del mismo continente desde sus países de origen hacia otros con mejor índice económico, social, educativo y sobre todo de oportunidades.
La xenofobia es una lacra asquerosa, y sí, lo digo categóricamente. Porque debería darnos vergüenza como hijos de migrantes que la inmensa mayoría de nosotros somos, repetir este comportamiento prejuicioso tan inhumano. Sin ir tan lejos, Venezuela, el país donde vivo y que desde hace años (último 8 para ser exactos) protagoniza una serie de migraciones bastante alarmantes de su población hacia otras latitudes, históricamente fue un país de acogida para quienes así lo decidían. Todos nosotros, los venezolanos, me refiero desde chicos estuvimos o conocimos hijos de migrantes de casi cualquier parte: pero especialmente de Colombia. Es más, los colombianos representan el grueso de toda la emigración establecida en Venezuela... Y no hablo del pasado, ¡si no actualmente!
However, for reasons related to the oil bonanza and the political and economic stability of the local currency, the vast majority of the population had no reason to emigrate in a systematic way (obviously, we had not known what chavismo was and its real consequences). In this sense, even we as a nation had, and still have, a love-hate relationship with migrants. And it is based on another nauseating scourge: racism. And that is my shame as a citizen who has seen it, witnessed it and can speak with absolute propriety about what is written here, without bias or loss of subjectivity. That is why I use Venezuela as the main subject of the use of xenophobia and racism.
In my country, it is not the same to come from Italy as it is to come from Trinidad and Tobago. Nor is it the same if you are the son of Colombians, or if part of your family has decided to emigrate, and they are from Chile or China. And I meticulously emphasise this, because it is common knowledge to hear the stories of xenophobic and racist acts that millions of Venezuelans around the world have suffered (and continue to suffer). I am not saying that I condone this aberrant behaviour, never. I am only breaking down the double standards and attacking the absurd causes that are self-evident but for some reason still reproduce like a contagious virus unchecked, with some exceptions.
Venezuela, as well as Latin America, has a high latent rate of endemic and ridiculously colonial racism. That is to say, the idea of "improving the race" through the reproduction between a native person of the continent (indigenous, mestizo, black or "criollo") with children or descendants of people coming from the "Old Continent" is still preserved. Just as it happened more than 210 years ago. If you don't see how absurd this is, you are simply part of the problem... For this specific reason, in previous lines, I wrote about racism and provenance. It is not the same to be the son of a Colombian or a Haitian as of a Spaniard or a German. And it is not only in Venezuela, but also in Latin America as a whole.
Sin embargo, por motivos relacionados con la bonanza del petróleo y la estabilidad política y económica de la moneda local, la inmensa mayoría de la población no tuvo motivos para emigrar de un modo sistemático (obviamente, no habíamos conocido lo que era el chavismo ni sus consecuencias reales). En este sentido, hasta nosotros como Nación teníamos, y aún mantenemos, una relación amor-odio ante los migrantes. Y se basa en otra lacra nauseabunda: el racismo. Y esa es mi vergüenza como ciudadano que la ha visto, presenciado y puede hablar con absoluta propiedad de lo que aquí está escrito, sin sesgo ni pérdida por subjetividad. Por eso, empleo a Venezuela como sujeto principal del uso de la xenofobia y el racismo.
En mi país, no da lo mismo provenir de Italia que de Trinidad y Tobago. Así como tampoco, que seas hijo de colombianos, o que parte de tu familia haya decidido emigrar, y sean de Chile o China. Y enfatizo meticulosamente en esto, porque es de común conocimiento oír los relatos de actos xenófobos y racistas que tuvieron (y aún siguen sufriendo millones de venezolanos en el mundo). No digo con esto, que yo apruebe esta conducta aberrante, jamás. Solo desmenuzo el doble rasero y ataco las causas absurdas que son evidentes por sí mismas pero que por alguna razón todavía se reproducen como un virus contagioso sin control alguno, salvo excepciones.
Venezuela, así como Latinoamérica, tienen un alto índice latente de racismo endémico y ridículamente colonial. Es decir, aún se preserva la idea de "mejorar la raza" a través de la reproducción entre una persona nativa del continente (indígena, mestizo, negro o "criollo") con hijos o descendientes de personas provenientes del "Viejo Continente". Tal cual sucedía hace más de 210 años. Si no ven lo absurdo que esto es, sencillamente son parte del problema... Por esta específica razón, en líneas anteriores, escribía sobre el racismo y la proveniencia. No da lo mismo ser hijo de colombiano o haitiano que de español o alemán. Y no solo es Venezuela, también en América Latina entera.
Vast are the cases of endemic racism in Chile, Argentina, Paraguay, Brazil and even Peru (the latter, along with Bolivia, with an overwhelmingly Native American population. What the actual f*ck?!!!) In legal matters, the Constitutions of most Latin American countries are full of gaps on emigration and on the applicable criteria for the right to secure and guaranteed emigration. That is why, to name just one tiny example, Mexico is one of the most cynical countries I have ever seen in my life. In a cruel, inhumane and extremely systematic way, they close off opportunities for Central American migrants; they are always burdened with bureaucratic tasks that are practically impossible to accomplish, they deport them and even stigmatise them for the simple fact that they are not white (again, Anglo-Saxons). By contrast, with white emigration, there has never been a problem. In fact, he considers it a "success". One only has to watch a little of Televisa or Televisión Azteca to see how diverse the staff of these two media giants in the country of the Aztecs and the Mayas is...
"Go back to your country! What are you doing here? We don't want you. Get out, you filthy Venezuelan!" These are some of the Pulitzer-worthy phrases that can be heard in any Latin American latitude. And I haven't gotten creative about the boys from the North of America (Hello Canada and the United States, all right?). But you can't be an eternal victim forever. I mean, it's not fair to criticise the "boys from the north" if we are vastly worse, but don't ever say it out loud. Because it will look like you're a heretic... As a society, in any Latin American country in one way or another, we have tolerated these behaviours and even encouraged them. Women, I am sure, will know more about this than, perhaps, any of us (biological men).
Vastos son los casos de racismo endémico en Chile, Argentina, Paraguay, Brasil e incluso Perú (este último, junto a Bolivia, con una población abrumadoramente repleta de nativos americanos. What the actual f*ck?!!) Se cree, en líneas generales, como se creía hace dos siglos, que los emigrantes blancos, europeo (da igual, si son o no, sajones y anglos) traen "mejoras" radicales a lo que "se suele ver"; a "lo ordinario". De hecho, el adjetivo "ordinario" en Venezuela, tiene un uso nada "común" para otras latitudes. De hecho; se emplea para decirle a alguien de modo "sutil" su estatus social. Es decir, como símil de "vulgar" o "indeseado". Ejemplo: "¡Ay, qué ordinario es ese tipo! Dios me libre de salir con un tipo así..."
En materia legal, las Constituciones de gran parte países latinoamericanos están repletas de vacíos sobre la emigración y sobre el criterio aplicable para el derecho a la emigración asegurada y garantizada. Es por eso, por solo nombrar un minúsculo ejemplo: que México es uno de los países con más cinismo que jamás haya visto en mi vida. De manera cruel, inhumana y sumamente sistemática cierran las oportunidades de los migrantes centroamericanos; siempre repletos de labores burocráticas prácticamente imposibles de lograr, los deportan y hasta estigmatizan por el simple hecho de no ser blancos (otra vez anglos y sajones). En cambio, con la emigración blanca, nunca ha habido problema alguno. De hecho, la considera un "acierto". Solo basta ver un poco de Televisa o Televisión Azteca para ver cómo de diverso en el staff de estos dos gigantes de la comunicación en el país de los Aztecas y los Mayas...
"¡Vete a tu país! ¿Qué haces aquí? No te queremos ¡Fuera veneco asqueroso!" Son algunas de las frases dignas de un Pulitzer que se puedan escuchar en cualquier latitud latinoamericana. Y eso que no me he puesto creativo con respecto a los chicos del norte de América (Hello Canadá y Estados Unidos, ¿todo bien?). Pero no se puede ser víctima eterna por siempre. Es decir, no es justo criticar a los "chicos del norte" si nosotros somos inmensamente peores pero eso sí, nunca lo digas en voz alta. Porque parecerá que eres un hereje... Como sociedad, en cualquier país latinoamericano de una u otra manera, hemos tolerado estos comportamientos e incluso fomentado. Las mujeres, estoy seguro, sabrán más sobre esto que, quizá, cualquier de nosotros (hombres biológicos).
Let's keep in mind, it is women who have historically been pressured with "picking the best candidate" to "make a home" and thus have children. Moreover, society is absolutely guided by the white Europeanist standard. Western television is a reflection of a percentage of humanity. Not of the bulk of the diversity that composes it, as is well known to all, and more so in Latin America! There can be no end to xenophobia and racism if these "values" continue to be promoted. It is simply not valid to classify human beings by their physical characteristics, eye colour or passport stamp.
If we really want to be different from others, to be proud of it, we must overcome this. We must denounce it and not corruptly exploit it for our own benefit. Because if consciously exploiting someone for your hedonistic benefit, devoid of empathy and humanity, doesn't stop you; you are closer to psychopathy than any other cognitive distortion that could be compared. And if, as a society, we grieve and empathise with the pain of child sex trafficking abuse in "a certain" US city, and not with the thousands of cases reported elsewhere in Latin America, we are sociopaths.
And definitely, turning a blind eye, or being "selective" for our convenient aesthetic use of morality, should simply shake us up and make us think again. In the end, we in Latin America are our own worst destroyers. But yes, it is a "delicate subject" and there will always be those who oppose it based on the never outmoded "argument" of "them and us". If I may (and also if not) those who practice this and are not even capable of questioning it, and on the contrary spread it as if it were smallpox to the next generations, deserve my disgust and total repudiation. So, no half-measures.
Tengamos en cuenta, que son las mujeres las que históricamente han sido presionadas con "escoger el mejor candidato" para "formar un hogar" y así tener hijos. Es más, la sociedad está absolutamente guiada por el estándar europeísta blanco. La televisión occidental, es un reflejo de un porcentaje de la humanidad. No del grueso de la diversidad que la compone como es bien conocido por todos, ¡y más en América Latina! No se puede dar fin a la xenofobia y al racismo si se siguen promoviendo estos "valores". Sencillamente, no tiene ninguna validez clasificar a los seres humanos por sus características físicas, el color de ojos o el sello del pasaporte.
Si queremos ser realmente distintos a los demás, estar orgullosos de ello, debemo sobreponernos a esto. Denunciarlo y no aprovecharnos corruptamente para nuestro beneficio. Porque si explotar conscientemente a alguien para tu beneficio hedonista y carente de empatía y humanidad, no te frena; estás más cerca de la psicopatía que de cualquier otra distorsión cognitiva que pudiera ser comparada. Y si como sociedad, nos afligimos y empatizamos con el dolor del abuso por tráfico sexual a menores en "determinada" ciudad estadounidense, y no con los miles de casos reportados en cualquier sitio latinoamericano, somos unos sociópatas.
Y definitivamente, hacernos de la vista gorda, o "selectivos" para nuestro conveniente uso estético de la moral, sencillamente nos debería sacudir y hacernos recapacitar. Al final, somos nosotros en Latinoamérica nuestros peores destructores. Pero eso sí, es un "tema delicado" y siempre habrá quienes se opongan basándose, en el nunca pasado de moda, "argumento" de: "ellos y nosotros". Si me permiten, (y también si no) quienes practican ésto y ni siquiera son capaces de cuestionárselo, y al contrario lo propagan como si de viruela se tratase a las siguientes generaciones, merecen mi asco y total repudio. Así, sin medias tintas.
