En esta oportunidad quiero hablarles un poco sobre la relación que existe entre el VPH (Virus de Papiloma Humano) y el cáncer de cuello uterino, así como también, incentivar a los que leen éste post a que tengan mucho cuidado al momento de mantener relaciones sexuales.

El VPH o Virus de Papiloma Humano, es un virus (valga la redundancia) que se transmite, principalmente, a través del contacto sexual, es decir, el contacto del virus con alguna mucosa (oral, vaginal, anal, etc.). Es la infección viral más frecuente del aparato reproductor, tanto en hombres como en mujeres

¿CUÁNTOS TIPOS DE VPH EXISTEN?

¿HOW MANY TYPES OF HPV ARE THERE?

Existen muchísimos serotipos de VPH, cada uno de ellos identificados mediante un número, de hecho, estos se dividen en dos grupos: los de alto riesgo y los de bajo riesgo.

¿Qué quiere decir que sean de alto o bajo riesgo?, esto significa que, los serotipos de alto riesgo tienen una alta probabilidad de producir lesiones precancerosas, que, si no se trata a tiempo, puede progresar a cáncer de cuello uterino. Y, los de bajo riesgo, solamente tienden a producir los llamados condilomas (verrugas).

Los serotipos más comunes y más estudiados son:

6 y 11: causan el 90% de las verrugas genitales.
16 y 18: causan el 70% de los cáncer de cuello uterino.

There are many HPV serotypes, each of them identified by a number, in fact, these are divided into two groups: high risk and low risk.

¿EXISTEN VACUNAS CONTRA EL VPH?

¿ARE THERE VACCINES AGAINST HPV?

Sí, existen vacunas aprobadas por la FDA y la OMS para proteger contra distintos tipos de VPH (los más frecuentes). Dichas vacunas están dentro del "programa de vacunas habituales" de diversos paises a nivel mundial; tristemente, Venezuela no cuenta con dichas vacunas ni tampoco con un programa de vacunación contra el VPH.

Yes, there are vaccines approved by the FDA and the WHO to protect against different types of HPV (the most common). These vaccines are within the "regular vaccine program" of various countries worldwide; Sadly, Venezuela does not have such vaccines nor does it have a vaccination program against HPV.

¿QUIÉNES PUEDEN VACUNARSE Y DESDE QUÉ EDAD?

¿WHO CAN BE VACCINATED AND FROM WHAT AGE?

Toda la población puede vacunarse contra el VPH, tanto hombres como mujeres; y, la edad ha sido motivo de controversia en distintos países. Lo que sí está algo unificado son ciertos criterios:

La edad de inicio de vacunación debe ser luego de los 9 años.
El tiempo de espera entre cada dosis debe ser de 6 meses.
La vacuna es más efectiva si la persona no ha iniciado una vida sexual activa.

The entire population can be vaccinated against HPV, both men and women; and, age has been a source of controversy in different countries. What is somewhat unified are certain criteria:

The age of starting vaccination should be after 9 years.
The waiting time between each dose should be 6 months.
The vaccine is more effective if the person has not started an active sexual life.

¿CUÁLES VACUNAS ESTÁN DISPONIBLES?

¿WHAT VACCINES ARE AVAILABLE?

Hasta el momento, existen 3 vacunas aprobadas por la OMS y FDA, las cuales protegen contra serotipos específicos:

Cervarix: protege contra los serotipos 16 y 18.
Gardasil: protege contra los serotipos 6, 11, 16 y 18.
Gardasil 9: protege contra los serotipos 6, 11, 16, 18, 31, 33, 45, 52 y 58.

NOTA: La vacuna NO es un tratamiento ni previene ninguna complicación, es decir, si una persona ya estuvo en contacto con algún serotipo de VPH, el aplicarse la vacuna no evitará que la infección siga su curso, simplemente evita la sobreinfección con el resto de los serotipos que posee la vacuna aplicada.

¿CÓMO PUEDO SABER SI TENGO VPH?

¿HOW CAN I KNOW IF I HAVE HPV?

Las lesiones por VPH son muy típicas, las principales apariciones son en forma de verrugas, las comúnmente llamadas: verrugas en forma de coliflor.

Éstas suelen aparecer en el sitio donde el virus tuvo contacto con alguna mucosa: zona anal, oral, genital, etc. Son fácilmente reconocibles, debido a que, su configuración tan típica las hace inconfundibles.

HPV lesions are very typical, the main appearances are in the form of warts, commonly called cauliflower-shaped warts.

These usually appear at the site where the virus had contact with a mucosa: anal, oral, genital area, etc. They are easily recognizable, because their typical configuration makes them unmistakable.

¿CÓMO EVITAR EL CONTAGIO CON VPH?

¿HOW TO AVOID SPREADING WITH HPV?

Lo básico y fundamental es el uso de preservativos, los condones tienen una alta tasa de efectividad (mayor del 90%) de protección contra Enfermedades de Trasmisión Sexual.

Evitar la promiscuidad, sobre todo los hombres, ya que, la infección por VPH en hombres, simplemente queda en eso, en un ainfección. El mayor riesgo lo corren las mujeres, ya que, la relación que existe entre el VPH y el cáncer de cuello uterino es bastante alta... Hombres, si no quieren cuidarse ustedes, al menos piensen en su pareja y la calidad de vida que ésta llevaría si llega a padecer de cáncer de cuello uterino.
