Entrar a quirófano siempre es una experiencia mística, pero cuando se trata de pacientes pediátricos y de la mano de grandes especialistas, se convierte en un verdadero privilegio. Acompáñenme a revivir cómo fue este día de cirugía y traumatología.
Hello, dear Hive community! 🤍 Today I want to share with you one of those intense days, full of adrenaline, learning, and a little bit of cold, that remind me exactly why I chose this path. Entering the operating room is always a mystical experience, but when it comes to pediatric patients and working alongside great specialists, it becomes a true privilege. Join me as I relive this day of surgery and traumatology.
🌅 Madrugar, Café y la Eterna Carrera / Early Rising, Coffee, and the Eternal Race
El día comenzó bastante temprano. A las 5:00 a.m. ya estaba en pie, con esa mezcla de sueño y emoción que nos caracteriza a los estudiantes de medicina. Mi prioridad absoluta era asegurar mi dosis de café y un buen desayuno para aguantar la jornada. Sin embargo, como cosa rara (gajes del oficio, supongo), el tiempo voló y se me hizo un poco tarde. Por suerte, los astros se alinearon a mi favor y al llegar al hospital me enteré de que los especialistas aún no habían arribado. ¡Un respiro de alivio antes de ponernos las batas!
The day started quite early. By 5:00 a.m. I was already up, with that mix of sleepiness and excitement that characterizes us as medical students. My absolute priority was to secure my dose of coffee and a good breakfast to endure the day. However, as unusual as it sounds (hazards of the trade, I guess), time flew by and I was running a bit late. Luckily, the stars aligned in my favor, and when I arrived at the hospital, I found out the specialists hadn't arrived yet. A sigh of relief before putting on our scrubs!
👦 Caso #1: Fractura Supracondílea Izquierda / Case #1: Left Supracondylar Fracture (Gartland III)
El primer paciente del día fue un valiente niño de 8 años. Su diagnóstico era una Fractura supracondílea izquierda clasificación Gartland III (una lesión de cuidado que requiere precisión absoluta). Su procedimiento fue una Reducción Cerrada (RC) + colocación de Alambre de Kirschner de 1.8mm.
Me encantó presenciar este acto médico; fue sencillamente increíble. El ambiente en el quirófano con los traumatólogos fue sumamente agradable y formativo. Los especialistas tuvieron la pedagogía y la paciencia de ir explicándome cada paso del procedimiento para que pudiera comprender la técnica a la perfección.
The first patient of the day was a brave 8-year-old boy. His diagnosis was a Gartland III left supracondylar fracture (a delicate injury that requires absolute precision). The procedure was a Closed Reduction (CR) + 1.8mm Kirschner Wire placement.
I loved witnessing this medical act; it was simply amazing. The atmosphere in the OR with the traumatologists was extremely pleasant and educational. The specialists had the teaching skills and patience to explain each step of the procedure so I could understand the technique perfectly.
💡 La realidad de la medicina en Venezuela / The reality of medicine in Venezuela:
No todo fue color de rosa. Vivir y hacer medicina en nuestro país se ha vuelto una verdadera prueba de resistencia. En pleno acto quirúrgico, ¡se fue la luz! Trabajar con las fallas eléctricas es una tortura, especialmente porque algunas máquinas dejan de funcionar de inmediato. Afortunadamente, el equipo médico supo resolver la contingencia con profesionalismo, la planta respondió y se pudo continuar con la cirugía. Al final, la cirugía fue todo un éxito y el pacientito pasó a la sala de recuperación con su mami.
Not everything was roses. Living and practicing medicine in our country has become a true test of endurance. In the middle of the surgical procedure, the power went out! Working with electrical failures is a torture, especially since some machines stop working immediately. Fortunately, the medical team knew how to handle the contingency professionally, the generator kicked in, and they were able to continue with the surgery. In the end, the surgery was a complete success, and the little patient was moved to the recovery room with his mom.
👧 Caso #2: Fractura de Radio Derecho / Case #2: Right Radius Fracture
La segunda intervención fue para un pediátrico de 11 años, quien presentaba una fractura del tercio distal del radio derecho en vía de consolidación* (mal alineada), por lo que requería corrección quirúrgica. La intervención fue igualmente una *Reducción Cerrada (RC) + Fijación con alambre de Kirschner de 1.8mm.
Cada una de las intervenciones duró aproximadamente una hora y media. Debo destacar la dulzura de ambos niños: fueron pacientes sumamente colaboradores, tiernos y valientes, lo que facilitó que todo fluyera con éxito rotundo.
The second intervention was for an 11-year-old pediatric patient, who presented a fracture of the distal third of the right radius in the process of consolidation (malaligned), which required surgical correction. The procedure was also a Closed Reduction (CR) + 1.8mm Kirschner wire fixation.
Each of the interventions lasted approximately an hour and a half. I must highlight the sweetness of both children: they were extremely cooperative, tender, and brave patients, which made everything flow with resounding success.
❄️ Reflexiones Finales: Frío Extremo / Final Reflections: Extreme Cold
Puedo decir con total certeza que este día fue una gran oportunidad y un verdadero privilegio. Entrar a quirófano con ambos traumatólogos me dejó un aprendizaje invaluable y una experiencia hermosa que atesoraré en mi formación. Si tuviera que dejar una sola queja... ¡es que casi me congelo! El frío en ese quirófano era verdaderamente horrible (¡sentía que me convertía en un cubito de hielo!), pero el calor del aprendizaje y la satisfacción de ver a los niños recuperados lo valió todo. Sin dudarlo, repetiría esta experiencia mil veces más.
I can say with total certainty that this day was a great opportunity and a true privilege. Entering the OR with both traumatologists left me with invaluable learning and a beautiful experience that I will treasure in my training. If I had to make just one complaint... it's that I almost froze! The cold in that OR was truly horrible (I felt like I was turning into an ice cube!), but the warmth of learning and the satisfaction of seeing the children recovered made it all worth it. Without a doubt, I would repeat this experience a thousand times over.
