. Initially I had no idea what kind of photos could be submitted. But I observed some friends posting photos with lots of blue colour. So, I know what to post straight away. Life in far away countryside by the border between Thailand and Laos is often surrounded by blue colour of the wide open sky and horizon. But I would like to add green colour to accompany the lovely blue colour of the sky. These two colours are the staples of my spiritual life and well being. I wake up to the pull of frequencies of blue sky and green trees. They are as vital as the air I breathe everyday. I think there’s an invisible silver threads circling around from the blue sky, green trees and my body. It is as if we are moving as one in this invisible and flexible silver orb. This is my invisible protection on earth.
I could see my two rich neighbours’ houses from the back of my garden. Their ancestors used to live in this area, that’s why they have lots of land and are well respected by local high society. Luckily these are down to earth people who know how to live healthy and happy life without being materialistic. I am lucky to have nice neighbours. I often saw the old gentleman working in the garden; he recently gave me three sugarcane shoots. So, I hope we’ll have fresh sugarcane juice next year!
We are very lucky to have several grown forest trees on the land. As these trees grow quite fast and their branches sometimes mingled with the electricity wire. We need to have these branches trimmed once a year at least. Besides these branches have made the garden very dark and quite scary at night. I am not really scared by ghosts or visiting aliens for I am confident I could handle them. But I would not want to accidentally step on any passing snakes. I just saw two young snakes recently. I am sure these snakes would not intentionally harm me but if they were surprised they could react too fast. I had an international peace treaty with local snakes!
This year we had a few workers to help with the trimming of branches. There were lots of chopped branches in the garden. So, the gardener asked the charcoal man to collect these branches. After a few weeks he gave us a sack of charcoal in return. So, we could barter tree branches for nice sack of charcoals. We sometimes exchange fruits with our neighbours, as we could taste each other’s produce. Sometimes I could walk along the country lane to check out local gardeners and came back with gifts of tomatoes and bunches of cilantro.
Local farmers and gardeners are very hard working and practical folks who did not have the privilege of higher education. That’s probably why they could be easily deceived by politicians’ propaganda and programmed by the media especially television’s daily news. They all know the latest number of COVID cases. Our education system is designed to make people passive and stop thinking for themselves.
I am very amazed by the ‘natural’ way the children of these simple hard working people have been raised which is completely opposite to middle class Chinese families. These children do not get any formal moral guidance or teaching from the adults; they are left to enjoy their childhood within the village. As school children, they are not disciplined to do their homework or to study for their exams. They have not been drilled to study hard, to aim towards higher education, to get scholarships to study abroad and to get good career path. So, these children have good time playing with friends everyday. Eventually,several nice boys have failed their exams and had to stay home with their parents. A little girl I used to know has become pregnant at fifteen years old. She had to drop school to have her baby; luckily the boy’s parents were very happy with their first grandson. Several girls got pregnant and had to give up school altogether. That’s the end of their future career. Without at least a high school certificate, it is impossible to get a good job. I found out that local villagers never educate their children about sex and safe sex. What’s more, more than half the teenagers are drug addicts. I know there is a continuous flow of various kinds of illegal drugs from across the river at night. The sparse night patrols could never catch up with these drug traffickers.
เราชอบสีฟ้ามากและถ้ามีสีเขียวมาตัดด้วยแล้ว ก็ยิ่งดูสวยมากขึ้น เราคิดว่าสีฟ้ามีพลังที่ดีมาก ดูแล้วจิตใจมีความสดชื่นและพอมาเจอสีเขียวของต้นไม้ เราก็ยิ่งมีแรงกระตุ้นในการตื่นแต่เช้า เพื่อมานั่งชื่นชมท้องฟ้าสดใสและใบไม้เขียวขจีในสวน เราโชคดีมากที่มีต้นไม้ป่าเกิดขึ้นเองในที่ของเราหลายต้น ตอนเขาสร้างบ้านก็ต้องตัดต้นไม้ไปหลายต้น ที่หลงเหลืออยู่สิบกว่าต้นก็พอทำให้บ้านครึ้มและร่มเย็น ปีที่แล้วเราไม่ได้ตัดแต่งกิ่งไม้ ทำให้ปีนี้ดูมืดครึ้มไปทั่วบริเวณ เราจึงต้องมีการระดมคนมาช่วยตัดต้นไม้สามสี่คนตอนต้นปี ได้ท่อนไม้กองใหญ่มาก คนสวนก็ไปบอกให้คนเผาถ่านมาเอาท่อนไม้ไปทำถ่าน สักสามสัปดาห์เราก็ได้ถ่านมาหนึ่งกระสอบใหญ่ เราชอบวิธีการแลกเปลี่ยนแบบนี้มาก ทำให้เราไม่ต้องใช้เงิน กลับไปใช้วิถีชีวิตแบบคนโบราณก็ดีเหมือนกัน
จากสวนหลังบ้านเราสามารถมองเห็นบ้านสองหลังที่อยู่ไม่ไกล เพื่อนบ้านทั้งสองครอบครัวเป็นคนในพื้นที่จึงได้รับมรดกเป็นที่ดินมากมาย เขามีอาชีพเป็นข้าราชการและมีฐานะดีมาก แต่คนที่นี่อยู่แบบติดดินและชอบทำสวน ชอบอยู่กับธรรมชาติและไม่ฟุ้งเฟ้อนัก เราก็โชคดีที่มีเพื่อนบ้านที่มีเมตตาต่อสัตว์และมีจิตใจดี เราได้กิ่งต้นอ้อยมาสามกิ่งจากเพื่อนบ้านที่เป็นบ้านทรงไทย เขากำลังปลูกอยู่ที่หน้าบ้าน ปีหน้าเราคงมีน้ำอ้อยสดไว้ดื่มแล้ว ก็ขอให้ฝนตกตามฤดูกาลด้วยก็แล้วกัน ส่วนบ้านหลังใหม่ติดกันเป็นบ้านน้องที่พึ่งสร้างเสร็จ สามีเป็นคนอเมริกันที่อยู่ด้วยกันที่อเมริกา เขาจะมาใช้ชีวิตในวัยชราที่บ้านใหม่ริมแม่น้ำนี้ เราก็หวังว่าเขาคงจะเดินทางมาเมืองไทยได้โดยเร็ว
เราแปลกใจวิธีการเลี้ยงลูกของคนในท้องถิ่นมาก สิ่งที่น่าทึ่งคือเขาปล่อยให้เด็กโตโดยไม่มีการสั่งสอนหลักการใช้ชีวิต หรือคุณธรรมประจำใจ เด็กๆจะโตโดยธรรมชาติจะออกไปเล่นกับเพื่อนๆในหมู่บ้าน พ่อแม่ที่นี่ต่างจากคนจีนชั้นกลางทั่วไปมาก เขาไม่มีการอบรมสั่งสอนให้ลูกนั่งทำการบ้าน อ่านหนังสือ เตรียมการสอบเลย เขาไม่ได้บอกให้เด็กมีความฝันการเรียนระดับมหาวิทยาลัย หรือหาทุนไปเรียนต่อต่างประเทศ เพื่อหางานที่มีความก้าวหน้าทำในอนาคต เขาไม่ได้สอนเรื่องการเก็บออมเงินหรือการลงทุน ดังนั้นเด็กที่เรารู้จักหลายคนจึงเรียนไม่จบชั้นประถม และต้องมาอยู่บ้านกับพ่อแม่ เด็กผู้หญิงหลายคนตั้งท้องในราวอายุ14 ถึง 15ปี บางคนก็เลิกเรียนไปเลย เด็กที่เราเคยรู้จักก็มีลูกผู้ชาย และออกมาทำงานหาเลี้ยงลูก สามีก็เป็นเด็กนักเรียนด้วยกัน โชคดีที่ปู่ย่าดีใจที่ได้หลานชาย เราพึ่งรู้ว่าผู้ใหญ่ไม่สอนเรื่องเพศและการป้องกันการมีลูกโดยไม่ตั้งใจ ระบบการศึกษาไทยยังแย่สุดๆ ทำให้คนคิดเองไม่เป็นและถูกมอมเมาด้วยข่าวกระแสหลักตลอด
The disappointing thing was that local officials from these villages tend to be very adept at corruption. It’s a shame that they swindled official budgets instead of spending on road maintenance and digging water reservoir. I was amazed that local villagers all knew about this but still re-elect these people as their local representatives. There was a special network of influence or power within each community. The lobbyists would reward those who follow their guidance with positions or benefits. This seems to be prevalent in all village level politics. During the last twenty years, the spread of corruption from the city has become a new pandemic of corruption at all levels of authorities. Local politicians just imitate those in big cities; these civil servants all have big houses and several cars after they have been in office a few years. This cancerous corruption has consumed all provinces and districts so I wonder how things could still function nowadays. I just hope that those good and hard working officials would be able to survive the tide of corruption and continue to work for the good of the country. There are still lots of good people; but they are not in positions of authority. We need to pray that bad karma would seek out their owners soon!
