The bright sunshine and clear blue sky days during the winter months in the north-east of Thailand are my favourite time of year. After three months of rainy weather and grey over cast sky, this dry and sunny spell is most welcome though we have to water those plants in the the garden at least twice a week.
The benefit of the rainy season is clearly reflected in the sizes of the trees, bushes and spreading weeds. Many years ago I was thinking of having a house near the sea so that I could go swimming in the sea and jog along the beach everyday. But fate played a nice trick on me and landed me in a place far away from the seaside. Now my house is surrounded by trees and green plants with a view of the river and a far away view of a famous mountain range in Laos. It is rather odd to know that most of my old friends have their second houses by the seaside and on the mountains in the north.
I am very grateful to all the trees and the land-spirits in my house as they really do look after everyone very well. Though we had a bad flood due to broken dam in Laos, the house was saved by a few inches from the flood. I had to climb through the fence at the back of the garden to get to my house as the road was under over a meter of water. The trees surrounding the house survived the three weeks’ flood and continued to give us shade and shelter from forthcoming storms. These trees with their green leaves continue to greet me in the morning.
I continue to be amazed by the hidden power of these trees. Their characters seem to grow stronger during the night with dark sky and silvery stars. They look like very tall guardians to me in the night. During the day, they tend to be more playful and like to dance in the warm sunshine. Their branches and leaves make very gentle music to my ears. No wonder so many birds like to sleep on these trees at night. And my cats also like to climb these tall trees.
เราชอบบรรยากาศของเดือนนี้มาก เพราะเราต้องเจอฤดูฝนที่ยาวนานหลายเดือนในปีนี้ และอากาศซึมเศร้าท้องฟ้าเป็นสีเทาบ่อยๆ พอหลังฤดูฝนอากาศเปลี่ยนเป็นท้องฟ้าสดใส แดดแจ่มและต้นไม้เขียวขจี เรารู้สึกว่าทุกอย่างเปลี่ยนแปลงไปในทางที่ดีขึ้น ข้อดีของหน้าฝนคือทำให้ต้นไม้รอบบ้านโตแผ่กิ่งก้านมากมาย ใบไม้สีเขียวอัดกันแน่นหนาตามกิ่งไม้ ทำให้เรามีงานเพิ่มขึ้นมาก ตั้งแต่การตัดแต่งกิ่งไม้ใหญ่ และตัดพุ่มไม้ในสวนเพราะมันโตมากไป พออากาศแห้งก็ทำให้ต้องรดน้ำต้นไม้รอบสวนบ่อยๆ แต่ก็ถือว่าเป็นการออกกำลังกายและทักทายต้นไม้ไปด้วย เราก็จะสังเกตเห็นความเปลี่ยนแปลงของต้นไม้ทุกต้น ทำให้เราได้รู้จักกับบุคคลิกของต้นไม้ด้วย
เราโชคดีมากที่โชคชะตาพาเรามาอยู่ที่แห่งนี้ ในอดีตเราคิดว่าเราน่าจะไปอยู่ใกล้ทะเลเพราะเราขอบว่ายนํ้าทะเล และชอบไปวิ่งออกกำลังกายริมทะเลด้วย เพื่อนเก่าของเราส่วนมากมีบ้านตามริมทะเล และบ้านบนภูเขาทางเหนือกันด้วย เรากลับมาทำสวนอยู่ที่นี่ห่างไกลจากเพื่อนสนิท เราชอบบรรยากาศธรรมขาติที่นี่ ต้นไม้ป่าขึ้นเองโดยธรรมชาติ เราก็ปลูกผลไม้ไว้รอบที่เพื่อจะได้มีผลไม้กินและขายบ้างในอนาคต
ความรู้สึกที่ดีมากคือตอนเช้า ต้นไม้สีเขียวตัดกับแสงแดดและท้องฟ้า ทำให้เราได้พลังชีวิตอย่างประหลาด แล้วก็มีเสียงนกร้องกันหลายสิบตัวในตอนเช้าด้วย เวลาลมพัดมาเสียงใบไม้ไหวไปมาก็เหมือนเสียงดนตรีไพเราะมาก เราชอบดูต้นไม้ในตอนกลางคืนเดือนมืด ท้องฟ้าจะมีดาวมากมายกระพริบเป็นสีเงิน ต้นไม้ใหญ่ก็ดูเหมือนเป็นผู้ปกปักรักษาบ้าน ดูต้นไม้มีความสง่าน่าเกรงขามมากในตอนกลางคืน ส่วนในตอนกลางวันต้นไม้ดูเหมือนคนตัวใหญ่ใจดีที่คอยให้ร่มเงาและกำบังลมพายุให้ทุกคนในบ้าน เรากลายเป็นคนชอบดูต้นไม้มากกว่านั่งมองทะเลไปแล้ว ต้นไม้ในบ้านและเจ้าที่คอยดูแลปกป้องพวกเราจากภัยอันตรายต่างๆ และให้ความร่มเย็นกับทุกคนในบ้านด้วย
We did manage to grow three papaya trees from seeds which a friend in Chiengmai sent us several months ago. A few papaya trees just died off with no reasons; luckily we have three plants left!
