Kite flying events are organized all over the world. In many countries kite flying events are celebrated annually and kite flying experts of different countries participate in these events. Basant has been a historic spring time kite flying festival in the Punjab region in India and Pakistan. Basant Mela has been used to be a source of income for many families in Pakistan. This Basant event generates million dollars revenue thus providing an income source to thousands of people.
In 2005, Pakistan's Supreme Court imposed a ban on Basant. They implemented this ban on basant because of the use of chemical strings in Kite flying. In this ban kite flying and selling is prohibited and accused will be sentenced to three years imprisonment and heavy fines will also be imposed.
Basant Mela is the kite flying festival of Pakistan to celebrate spring season every year and is held mainly in Lahore, the historic capital of Punjab. In Pakistan Basant is also known as Jashan-e-Baharan that means festival of spring. On Basant eve people fly kites, eat food and also display folk art, dancing and music. On this day all sky is full of kites and people also wear colorful clothes. Women also participate in it specially in Lahore where they wear yellow color clothes which is the color of spring and also wear bangals etc.
But still spring is incomplete without the basant. So despite the ban basant melas are organized by local authorities on some safe venues. On these venues they check the material and try to maintain a family fun activity. So in Islamabad these basant events are organized in F9 park area. A large number of families participate from twin cities. These fun filled activities last all day.
On this day we must discourage the use of chemical laced strings and also avoid to do any firing as these things are dangerous for common people.
