Hello friends of Hive, I hope you are having a great day in the company of your nearest and dearest. On this occasion, unfortunately, the tone of the following post is not comforting at all. For, I will address one of the saddest scourges that darken Cuban society today. Corruption, delinquency and lack of hygiene.
Claro, temas tan englobados como estos, podrían verse en ejemplos por separado usualmente. Sin embargo, logré constatar en un rincón de la geografía habanera, como tales males convivían en armonía caótica, en lo que fuese un centro de libre esparcimiento, como los Jardines de la Polar.
Of course, issues as encompassing as these could usually be seen in separate examples. However, I was able to observe in a corner of Havana's geography, how such evils coexisted in chaotic harmony, in what used to be a free recreation center, such as the Polar Gardens.
¿Pero, qué fueron los Jardines de la Polar?
Los Jardines de la Polar, antes del triunfo de la revolución castrista, era uno de los parques más espectaculares en belleza natural de todo el país. Ubicados en el municipio de Marianao, al márgen del Río Almendares, por Puentes Grandes, esta apología a la belleza arquitectónica del hombre, en combinación con la botánica natural, fungía como la cede de grandes eventos.
But, what were the Polar Gardens?
The Polar Gardens, before the triumph of the Castro revolution, was one of the most spectacular parks of natural beauty in the country. Located in the municipality of Marianao, on the banks of the Almendares River, by Puentes Grandes, this apology to the architectural beauty of man, in combination with natural botany, served as the venue for major events.
En parte, por dos razones, la primera por la organización detallada de sectores dedicados al ocio, entre salas de bailes, fiestas, y viajes por el río Almendares en bote. La otra, y con gran particularidad, los jardines eran también la cede de la mitológica empresa de cervezas la polar. Centro, que instauró un sello de calidad para el mundo, de la cerveza cubana.
In part, for two reasons, the first was the detailed organization of sectors dedicated to leisure, including dance halls, parties, and boat trips on the Almendares River. However, all that is now history. Since the fall of the socialist camp in 1990, the gardens fell into indecent neglect by the government. Esta situación vergonzosa, se fue prolongando a lo largo de los años. Convirtiéndose, una obra dedicada al ocio del pueblo, en una jungla con tintes apocalípticos. Qué, lograría durante principios de los 2000, volverse en una suerte de mantra para fotógrafos, que combinaban lo bello del paisaje natural, con las ruinas de los grandes comercios de aquel centro.
This shameful situation was prolonged over the years. A work dedicated to the leisure of the people became a jungle with apocalyptic overtones. During the early 2000s, it became a sort of mantra for photographers, who combined the beauty of the natural landscape with the ruins of the big stores in that center.
Lamentablemente, donde la justicia y el poder gubernamental no velan, la delincuencia y la inmundicia prevalecen. Comenzando una migración masiva, de inmigrantes de zonas del campo cubano, quienes se instalaron ilegalmente en esta zona. Confeccionando casas rudimentarias e insalubres, que albergan a gran parte de la peor calaña de la Habana. Por lo general, ladrones, negociantes del mercado negro, y violadores. Qué bajo la excusa, de que vivían en la pobreza, se estacionaron ahí.
Unfortunately, where justice and governmental power are not vigilant, crime and filth prevail. Starting a massive migration of immigrants from the Cuban countryside, who settled illegally in this area. They have built rudimentary and unsanitary houses, which house many of the worst people in Havana. Generally, thieves, black market traders, and rapists. Es catastrófico, como han deforestado parte del bosque endémico, y desplazado a especies endémicas, en su afán de construir sus casas. Las cuales, crean un conjunto dantesco, propio de imágenes surrealistas del pasado cubano. Por el cual se lucho evitar, pero que sin embargo, se erige como llaga sangrante del corazón del habanero.
It is catastrophic, as they have deforested part of the endemic forest, and displaced endemic species, in their eagerness to build their houses. Which create a Dantesque set, typical of surrealistic images of the Cuban past. For which it was fought to avoid, but that nevertheless, it stands as a bleeding sore of the heart of the habanero.
Ojalá, y algún día, las cosas cambien para este otrora gran parque. Quizás, el régimen caiga y los dueños originales recuperen el lugar, que le devuelvan el brillo. Oh, de una forma estremecedora, las ruinas y pilares de las viejas estructuras humanas, caigan y hagan añicos a los impíos bandoleros que robaron el lugar, propiciando que la madre naturaleza sane el lugar de sus impurezas.
Hopefully, and someday, things will change for this once great park. Perhaps, the regime will fall and the original owners will reclaim the place, bring back its luster. Oh, in a shocking way, the ruins and pillars of the old human structures will fall and shatter the ungodly bandits who stole the place, allowing Mother Nature to cleanse the place of its impurities.
