No cabe dudas de que La India está entre los países más fascinantes y misteriosos del planeta, es dueño de una arquitectura soberbia y hermosa, leyendas sorprendentes y una cultura enigmática, pero lo que quiero compartir con ustedes el día de hoy es un soberbio templo que, según lo que muchos cuentan, alberga dentro de una de sus bóvedas algo que podría resultar terrible o maravilloso para la humanidad.
There is no doubt that India is among the most fascinating and mysterious countries on the planet, the owner of a superb and beautiful architecture, amazing legends and an enigmatic culture, but what I want to share with you today is a superb temple that, according to what many say, houses within one of its vaults something that could be terrible or wonderful for humanity.
Este majestuoso templo está ubicado en la ciudad de Trivandrum, en el estado de Kerala, no se sabe exactamente cuando fue construido, aunque hay un grabado que dice que fue en el día 964 después de la Kaliyuga (período de guerra con el dios Kali, alrededor del 3.102 a.C.) pero no se sabe con exactitud cuál fue el año de construcción, solo que fue erigido en honor al dios Visnú.
This majestic temple is located in the city of Trivandrum, in the state of Kerala, it is not known exactly when it was built, although there is an engraving that says that it was in the day 964 after the Kaliyuga (period of war with the god Kali, around 3.102 B.C.) but it is not known exactly what the year of construction was, only that it was erected in honour of the god Vishnu.
El templo de por sí tiene una arquitectura fascinante y majestuosa, llena de múltiples detalles, y en su interior posee muchas esculturas magistrales entre las cuales destaca la de la deidad hindú Vishnu sobre 6 serpientes, también hay columnas talladas y pinturas.
The temple itself has a fascinating and majestic architecture, full of many details, and inside it has many masterful sculptures, including one of the Hindu deity Vishnu on 6 snakes, carved columns and paintings.
Pero lo que llama más la atención en todo esto son las cámaras o bóvedas que posee el templo, todas ellas protegidas por el más absoluto secretismo y misterio, pero ¿qué sucede con estas cámaras? Pues, desde que La India se independizó del imperio británico, el país decidió nacionalizar todas las riquezas de los Marahas (la realeza), aunque la familia Travancore (la familia real) insistía en que el templo era propiedad privada porque la había comprado a principios del siglo XVIII a la casta keralense de los Nair, sin embargo en 1972, el gobierno indio revocó el poder de la familia real.
But what is most striking in all this are the chambers or vaults that the temple has, all of them protected by the most absolute secrecy and mystery, but what is going on with these chambers? Well, since India gained independence from the British Empire, the country decided to nationalise all the wealth of the Marahas (royalty), although the Travancore family (the royal family) insisted that the temple was private property because they had bought it in the early 18th century from the Keralan caste of the Nairs, but in 1972, the Indian government revoked the power of the royal family.
En el año 2014 el Tribunal Supremo de La India decidió abrir las cámaras del templo (intuyendo que dentro de sus cámaras había una fortuna) y en efecto, cuando abrieron casi todas ellas no podían dar crédito a todo lo que encontraron: joyas venecianas, monedas napoleonícas y romanas, diamantes, rubíes, esmeraldas, esculturas de oro macizo de cinco metros de de altura e incluso un coco de oro relleno de rubíes. Toda esta fortuna fue tasada en un valor de 22 mil millones de dólares estadounidenses.
In 2014 the Supreme Court of India decided to open the chambers of the temple (sensing that there was a fortune inside) and indeed, when they opened almost all of them they could not believe what they found: Venetian jewellery, Napoleonic and Roman coins, diamonds, rubies, emeralds, five-metre-high solid gold sculptures and even a gold coconut filled with rubies. The entire fortune was appraised at a value of 22 billion US dollars.

But when they tried to open the last door it proved impossible. It is a huge metal door (its thickness is obviously unknown as it has not been opened) tightly sealed, containing no buttons, handles or nuts as the others did, and is adorned by a pair of snakes in a threatening attitude, something that local mythology takes as an omen of destruction or a curse that may befall anyone who dares to open it as it is protected by a "Naga Bandham", which is nothing more than a snake binding spell, used to guard sacred doors, and also by sound waves.
Los monjes que custodian el templo aseguran que no es totalmente imposible abrirla, es decir, existe una posibilidad de hacerlo de forma segura (sin sufrir las malas consecuencias) y es que el único (según sus creencias) que podría abrirla y develar el misterio, debe ser un «Sadhus», es decir, un gran erudito, o los «Mantikras» que son los expertos en manejar los «Naga bandham» a traves del canto del «Mantra Garuda»
The monks who guard the temple assure that it is not totally impossible to open it, that is, there is a possibility to do it safely (without suffering bad consequences) and that the only one (according to their beliefs) who could open it and unveil the mystery, must be a "Sadhus", that is, a great scholar, or the "Mantikras" who are the experts in handling the "Naga bandham" through the chanting of the "Mantra Garuda".
¿Por qué este canto o mantra no puede ser pronunciado por cualquiera? Why can't this chant or mantra be uttered by just anyone? According to legend, whoever uses it must be a holy man and an expert, since the lock consists of many mechanical links and when the voice is modulated in a certain way (which only the expert knows) the sound waves are amplified and move the different mechanical parts of the lock and the door is unlocked, otherwise, if the person who tries to open the door is not the right one or uses a different mantra, the sound waves generated will be directed elsewhere, perhaps to the nearest snakes and provoke them to attack.
Mucho se ha especulado acerca de lo que podría albergarse detrás de esa misteriosa puerta, unos dicen que hay más tesoros (algo que no parece probable ya que las cámaras que contenían riquezas se abrieron sin ninguna dificultad) otros piensan que podría contener una maldición o terribles calamidades (como una especie de caja de pandora) que podría escapar si la puerta se abre por la fuerza con la tecnología moderna, y también hay personas que sostienen la hipótesis de que lo que se esconde detrás de esas puertas podría ser un gran conocimiento para el cuál la humanidad no está preparada, un conocimiento que podría explicar porqué las civilizaciones antiguas podían construir grandes edificaciones como el propio templo de Padmanabhaswamy, por ejemplo, sin la tecnología con la que contamos hoy en día.
There has been much speculation about what might lie behind this mysterious door, some say there is more treasure (which seems unlikely as the chambers containing riches were opened without any difficulty) others think it might contain a curse or terrible calamities (like a kind of pandora's box) that could escape if the door is forced open with modern technology, and there are also people who hypothesise that what is hidden behind these doors could be great knowledge for which mankind is not prepared, knowledge that could explain why ancient civilisations could build great buildings like the Padmanabhaswamy temple itself, for example, without the technology we have today.

Desde luego que hay debates y polémicas con respecto al tesoro hallado en el interior de las cámaras y que podría solucionar los problemas económicos del país en el cual el 30% de la población vive en extrema pobreza. Algunos han sugerido derretir el oro para vendérselo a los joyeros que han tenido que lidiar con la escasez del material, otros opinan que podría ser invertido en el progreso de la nación, pero las organizaciones de la religión hindú exigen que se quede donde está, ya que los tesoros tienen un alto valor histórico y religioso.
Of course, there is debate and controversy about the treasure found inside the chambers, which could solve the economic problems of a country where 30% of the population lives in extreme poverty. Some have suggested melting the gold to sell it to jewellers who have had to deal with a shortage of the material, others say it could be invested in the progress of the nation, but Hindu religious organisations demand that it should stay where it is, as the treasures have a high historical and religious value.
