Se trata de las famosas fotografías Post Mortem de la época victoriana. ¿Habías escuchado hablar de ellas? Te invito a leer este artículo para conocer de qué se trata.

Daguerrotipo/Daguerreotype
En la época victoriana, específicamente en 1939, en Francia, surgió el daguerrotipo, un procedimiento mediante el cual se obtenían imágenes reales. Fue inventado por Louis-Jacques-Mandé Daguerre.
In Victorian times, specifically in 1939, in France, the daguerreotype emerged, a procedure by which real images were obtained. It was invented by Louis-Jacques-Mandé Daguerre.
Elaborar un retrato era un proceso largo y tedioso, sobre todo para la persona retratada que debía posar durante horas, ésta es la razón principal por la cual la mayoría de los rostros de las personas que aparecen en esas fotografías, tienen expresiones de incomodidad o incluso de cansancio. Para este proceso, y con el fin de restarle incomodidad al retratado, recurrían a una serie de artilugios para que permaneciera inmóvil ya que, el más mínimo movimiento, podía arruinar la fotografía. Sin embargo, era imposible mantener los ojos fijos, sin parpadear, y por esta causa, la mayoría de las personas salían con los ojos cerrados, así que un artista tenía la tarea de pintarlos sobre la imagen ya revelada.
Making a portrait was a long and tedious process, especially for the person portrayed who had to pose for hours, this is the main reason why most of the faces of the people that appear in those photographs, have expressions of discomfort or even of tiredness. For this process, and in order to reduce discomfort to the person portrayed, they resorted to a series of devices to make him remain immobile since, the slightest movement, could ruin the photograph. However, it was impossible to keep the eyes fixed, without blinking, and because of this, most people appears with their eyes closed, so an artist had the task of painting them over the already developed image.

A esta práctica también la llamaban «Memento mori» (recuerda que morirás) Se trata de fotografías en las que aparecían personas muertas, generalmente acompañadas por sus familiares u objetos más preciados.
They also called this practice "Memento mori" (remember that you will die). These are photographs in which dead people appeared, generally accompanied by their relatives or most precious objects.

Los daguerrotipos eran claramente una forma de conservar la imagen de una persona prácticamente para toda la vida, y aunque era un procedimiento costoso, en algún punto, dada su evolución y popularidad, comenzó a ser un poco más accesible para personas de bajos recursos. Sin embargo, todavía seguían siendo un poco caros, por lo tanto, las familias pobres, la mayoría de las veces solo tenían una fotografía que normalmente se realizaba al fallecer un familiar.
Daguerreotypes were clearly a way of preserving a person's image for practically a lifetime, and although it was an expensive procedure, at some point, due its evolution and popularity, it became a little more accessible to poor people. However, they were still a bit expensive, therefore, poor families most of the time only had a photograph that was normally taken when a relative died.

Según el pedido de sus clientes, en numerosas ocasiones, para elaborar las fotografías post mortem, el fotógrafo debía ser lo más creativo posible, pues tenía la difícil tarea de retratar a esa persona muerta de una forma que pareciera «viva». Los muertos lucían sus mejores ropas y, muchas veces se mostraban sentados o incluso de pie.
According to the request of his clients, on numerous occasions, in order to produce post-mortem photographs, the photographer had to be as creative as possible, since he had the difficult task of portraying that dead person in a way that seemed "alive." The dead wore their best clothes and were often shown sitting or even standing.
La joven que aparece en el medio de las dos personas en la fotografía de arriba, está muerta. Se cree que sus acompañantes eran sus padres y que sus imágenes quedaron borrosas debido a que probablemente se movieron durante el largo periodo en que debían permanecer posando.
The young woman in the middle of the two people in the photograph above, was dead. It's believed that the woman and the man on either side of her, were her parents and that their images were blurred because they probably moved during the long period in which they had to remain posing.
Para realizar fotografías donde el cadáver aparecía de pie, se usaba una plataforma que se escondía detrás de él para mantenerlo erguido.
To take photographs where the corpse appeared standing, a platform was used that was hidden behind it to keep it upright.
La mayoría de los familiares les pedían a los fotógrafos que hiciera lucir al cadáver de una forma natural, como si la persona estuviese viva y posando antes de un gran acontecimiento.
Most family members asked photographers to make the corpse look natural, as if the person were alive and posing before a big event.
Cuando no era posible mantener los ojos de los cadáveres abiertos, entonces el fotógrafo los pintaba por encima de los párpados.
When it was not possible to keep the eyes of the corpses open, then the photographer painted them above the lids.

Era muy común que los niños fueran los que en su mayoría, engrosaran la taza de mortalidad en la época victoriana, por causa de múltiples enfermedades, así que la única forma de conservar un recuerdo de estos niños, era recurrir a un fotógrafo para que les realizara un daguerrotipo que les permitiera conservar un recuerdo tangible de ellos.
It was very common for children to be the ones who, for the most part, increased the mortality rate in Victorian times, due to multiple diseases, so the only way to preserve a memory of these children was to go to a photographer to make a daguerreotype that would allow them to keep a tangible memory of them.
Era muy común que los padres hicieran que los niños vivos posaran junto a sus hermanos muertos.
It was very common for parents to make that living children pose with their dead siblings.
Información extra/Extra information
Algunas veces había cierto simbolismo en la estética de los retratos Post mortem, ya que algunos muertos eran retratados con una rosa con el tallo corto y vuelta hacia abajo, para señalar la juventud de la persona fallecida, o también colocaban al cadáver junto a un reloj que señalaba la hora de su muerte.
Sometimes there was a certain symbolism in the aesthetics of Post mortem portraits, since some dead were portrayed with a rose with a short stem and turned downward, to indicate the youth of the dead person, or they also placed the corpse next to a clock that marked the hour of his death.
En conclusión, creo que, aunque actualmente estas fotografías puedan parecernos extrañas, grotescas o incluso escalofriantes, no debemos olvidar que en aquella época, éste era el único recurso que las personas tenían para recordar a sus familiares muertos, ellos conservaban estas fotografías como un tesoro, y de esta manera podían hacer que las futuras generaciones conocieran a sus antepasados.
In conclusion, I believe that, although these photographs may seem strange, grotesque or even chilling to us today, we must not forget that, at that time this was the only resource that people had to remember their dead relatives, they kept these photographs as a treasure , and in this way they could make future generations know their ancestors.
