Riku Mattila is a Finnish physicist specialized in nuclear reactors who has suffered from motor nerve degrading ALS since 2012. He has been on an invasive ventilator since 2017. He resisted attempts at persuading him to give up for an invasive ventilator, which would've been a death sentence.
The Covid pandemic affected his treatment multiple times. His ventilator requires the presence of a nurse in his room 24/7. A shortage of available nurses forced some of them to pull 80-90 hour weeks. Once a nurse had dozed off which caused her/him to miss a disconnected hose. Mattila was rescued by his wife who was working distantly in the next room at the time.
Mattila recounts losing his consciousness a total of six times due to accidents such as disconnected hoses. Once a nurse was smoking outside when a hose came off and Mattila almost suffocated.
He's now working for Steady Energy, a company aiming to develop a nuclear powered heating district plant.
