Ben was an athlete, a prominent one at that.....with a perfect body, perfectly tanned skin, perfect and lusciously kissable lips. An all-ladies man.
He had won many tournaments and was proud of everything he had. Engaged, to be married to Lynda- an epitome of beauty and a supermodel. Their marriage was that of convenience and not of love.
Several other girls he had dated, got them pregnant and to told them to abort, sorting them with money yo shut them up. He only loved one of his girlfriends and thus, he sends money for her upkeep and that of his child. Maureen was demanding nevertheless, he kept up to her needs- she was a concubine. They got married officially in July 2030. A glamorous wedding.
After the wedding, his attitude changed and he became secretive, kept late nights, snubbed Lynda, worse of all, heavily drunk for each of the nights.
Lynda became restless and began to panic because this was not what she pictured their marriage to be. She became suspicious, checked his email but saw nothing demanding questioning.
How did we get here, she queried herself?
She however continued tolerating him.
One bright sunny afternoon, as Lynda approach the living room from the kitchen, Ben was speaking with a female on phone.
Please, take care of my baby, Ben said. Expect the money for your upkeep ASAP.
Lynda was greatly troubled that she arranged a henchman to eliminate the strange woman and her son, a job the henchman neatly did.
When Ben got a call that his concubine had been murdered in cold blood with his son, hot sweat covered his skin as he forgot all his cars and picked a can to the scene. While he crossed to the other side of the road, he was knocked down by a speeding car.
After four days, at the emergency ward of the St. Nicholas hospital, he woke up to the sound of the beeper. Been has lost his greatest asset, his legs. He won't be able to join the sprinters in the next Olympics at Beijing.
Reality struck him when be heard his wife has file a divorce and was already parking out of their house with their children, Mara and Michael.
It was a devastating period for Ben. Not being able to walk again was a great set back. Even though he was compensated by the government and well wishers, there was little he could do being on a wheelchair. His source of income, the support of life- his wife, and legs were all gone.
What is life about, Ben argued with himself?
On the laundry bench stood a green bottle filled with insecticide.
I have to end it all. Ben whispered to himself
He gulped the whole content and for the last time in life, he closed his eyes. His skills, wealth and fame, gone.
END.
