Months ago, looking at an empty plastic bottle, I thought, "This could be a home for a succulent." I cut it, made some holes for drainage, put soil in carefully, and planted that little chubby one that someone had given me. I placed it horizontally in a corner of the garden that gets morning sun and afternoon shade.

alt

Today I went to water it, as I do every two or three days, but something moved. At first I thought it was a dry leaf blown by the breeze. I leaned in closer, and there she was: a medium sized frog, with enormous eyes and shiny skin, curled up right in the crevice between the damp soil and the fleshy leaves of the succulent. She didn't run away. She looked at me and blinked slowly, as if I were the unexpected visitor and not her.

alt

I stayed there for a good while feeling something I didn't know how to name. First it was surprise, and then a pinch of envy, because she had indeed found a place where she lacks neither shade nor coolness, a shelter that fits her perfectly. Then, a silly, solitary laugh, and finally, a happiness so clean that it almost weighed on my chest. I had built a house, but not for my succulent.

alt

That frog chose my recycled bottle, my second hand soil, my improvised garden mess, and by doing so, she included me in something bigger than my clumsy hands and my novice patience. I had conspired with nature without meaning to.

alt

Now every time I look at that corner, I know there is not just a pot, but a small ecosystem where a frog rests, a plant grows, and I water with extra care so as not to disturb amphibian dreams. I no longer have "a succulent in a bottle." I have a frog tenant, a story to tell, and the certainty that happiness can sometimes fit inside a plastic container, if you place it where life decides to stay.

alt

In the end, I don't know if she will stay for long, but for now, I will be the clumsy neighbor who brings her water without making noise, because when you take care of a plant and a frog appears, nature is returning a favor you didn't even know you had done.

Un inesperado hogar para una rana

alt

No saliรณ corriendo.
