The passion for creating small works of art as porcelain figurines of eggs as trinket boxes started in the French village of La Bouteille, some 500 kilometers from the French region of Limousin where the artists and ateliers of Limoges Boxes are known for creating their own special works of art in the form of porcelain hinged boxes.
An atelier is a room where artists make their work. A painter’s atelier will be full of paint, brushes, canvases, and other tools of the trade. Sculptors and designers also have ateliers. An atelier gives the artist the space and privacy needed to create. An atelier is a place of creativity. (www.vocabulary.com)
Both the Favri family and the factories of Limoges started in the 1700s in creating unique art collected all over the world, resplendent in brilliant colors and exquisite hand-painted details.
This stunning hand painted floral rose trinket box in the shape of an egg was made by Limoge. It was gifted to me years ago and I hope to keep it in the family as an heirloom. As porcelain is fragile and I am oftentimes clumsy, the egg is kept in a curio hutch for safekeeping. I know nothing about the age or its value. If anyone recognizes the rose pattern and can shed some light, please leave a comment below.
I hope everyone is staying safe and keeping healthy while continuing to practice social distancing during the Coronavirus pandemic. Good news is that it is helping flatten the curve!
