They say thinking back fondly of the old days is a sure sign of getting old. If that is indeed the case, and I pretty much agree that it is, I am definitely getting old! Believe me I enjoy using tech as much as the next guy. I spend way too much time on my PC, and could hardly live without my (cell) phone. I mean we text instead of talk. Next we might move up to Morse code again lol. And no, I do not still have a landline. I can hear all the "OK Boomer"s 😄.
I Dont Have the Answers
However, it just feels like we are going backwards in many ways. What I actually mean is as a country. We are no longer nimble. We dont seem able to get anything done or fix any problem. For example the supply chain. We had x number of freighters anchored, waiting for ages to unload cargo. In the old days they would expand the ports or build new ones. Now we ring our hands and wonder what we can do. Surely we would have to do environmental impact studies that would take decades to work through.
Of course we seem unable to build anything here whatsoever. For example, Ford has thousands of vehicles build and parked that cannot be sold because they are waiting for some semiconductor chips.
How we managed to get ourselves in such a predicament is beyond me. I know we like to be able to purchase inexpensive goods, but now it has become a matter of national security. Clearly we are too dependent on potential adversaries to produce what we need to live let alone defend ourselves.
Sometimes I feel we have lost out can do spirit. I hope we can find our footing and get it back. I think bringing some of the manufacturing back here is a good place to start. One would think industry has seen the obvious harm to their business by not having more local control over production. Let me know what you think...
